Jmp_37 Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 I always hear people talking about fishing the inside edge of weeds but have no idea what they are talking about... Could someone please inform me? Quote
nascar2428 Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 From my perspective(fishing from the bank), the inside edge would be the grass line facing the shore and the outside edge would be facing open water. I could be totally off base on this, but that is how I define the edges of a grass line. From a boat it would be the opposite. 3 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted August 1, 2018 Super User Posted August 1, 2018 Depends on your perspective. There can be an inside edge to a weedline close to shore where the water is too shallow to support weed growth. There can be weedlines deeper that will have an edge closer to shore but as a second grouping from the first example I gave. Then there are weed beds in deep water that the inside edge would be the edge closest to shallower water relative to the depth of the weedbed. 4 Quote
BigAngus752 Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 @TOXIC Gives a great description. The first thing that popped into my head (as a rookie fisherman) was what @nascar2428 said. I search every time I'm out for that line of weeds just a few feet off shore. I put my boat parallel and throw a frog (sometimes a Spook) in the space between the weeds and shore (inside edge of weeds). It is always, always, always good for fish. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted August 1, 2018 Super User Posted August 1, 2018 When I can line up a weed edge and work down it, I'm usually a happy camper, inside or outside. In my experience inside usually refers to the shallower side, and outside to the deeper, but sometimes that can differ depending on the actual conditions and body of water. Quote

papajoe222 Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 What Tom said. For off shore humps, or other instances where the shore isn't a factor, it would be the shallow side of the weed-bed. 2 Quote

Super User geo g Posted August 2, 2018 Super User Posted August 2, 2018 Sometimes wave action will keep weeds close to shore from growing there, and create an inside weed line in shallow water. This happens quite often in Florida with all the grasses and weeds we have in our shallow lakes. I fish both inside and outside edges. Quality fish will often hang out on the inside edge. getting them through all that vegetation will sometimes be the problem. Heavy line, and stout rods, solves the problem. 2 Quote
diversity210 Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 For me the inside edge of weeds or a grass line would be the shallow side of the grass line. Now this does not always mean the side facing the shoreline. Especially at reservoirs. The reason I think people say fish the inside edge of grass lines is because bluegill like to bed in shallow cover close to drop offs and ridges. So the inside edge of weeds and grass lines give bass perfect cover for ambush. That is just the way I see it. Others might see it differently. I love to fish but the one thing that has always bothered me about fishing is all of the generalized terms and the lack of many standards. 2 Quote
