John J. Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Hey all, I am currently looking for a trailer for my 12' v hull jon boat. The boat itself is like 150 pounds it seems like and it is a hassle trying to manhandle the thing out of the bed of the truck... I was thinking of this model here: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=5002 But I am not 100% certain that this will fit my need. I mean It says that it fits 12' and 14' boats. The width for the entire trailer is 50", which is 2" larger than my jon boat (48"). It is on sale now...would this be a good trailer to purchase? or should I look for a better one? PS: This model REQUIRES assembly. Quote
Olebiker Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 The width between the fenders is 38 1/2". I believe that is going to be the critical measurement. If you choose to buy it, be ready to check the bearing adjustment and lubrication before you use it. I have had good luck with some Harbor Freight stuff. Quote
w4svc Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Check around your area see if there is anyone scraping out boats. When I was looking for a trailer I was looking at the same trailers you are looking at. I ended up with a good trailer for 75.00. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 9, 2008 Super User Posted February 9, 2008 http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_1063_1063 If memory serves, a member here has that trailer. Team Dougherty or something like that. One thing to consider is that you'll be spending an extra $50-100 on top of what you pay for the trailer. You'll need a winch and at least a cheap jack. While the jack isn't absolutely necessary, having one is convienent, especially when moving the trailer. I looked long and hard at these trailers a couple of years ago. Ended up going to Tracker Marine and buying a Shorelandr for $750. Quote

Its okay just buy better bearings from the start. It has small tire that you could upgrade. Quote

Kansas Angler Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 my buddy found a trailor by looking for boats on craigslist and the newspaper that were the same dimensions as his and he just bought the trailer without the boat, he got a pretty good deal only 100 dollars for a trailer for his 14 foot jon Quote
Jr.Bass Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 I would recomend building some brackets on the back so you can put some pvc on them and that would help guide the boat on the trailer Quote
