Jim Sutter Posted July 28, 2018 Posted July 28, 2018 How well does Spinner Baits work when using a spinning reel? Does a Spinner Bait have to be near the surface to catch fish? Quote
LonnieP Posted July 28, 2018 Posted July 28, 2018 Spinnerbaits work just fine with spinning gear and they will catch fish anywhere in the water column, so no it doesn't have to be near the surface. 1 Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 28, 2018 Author Posted July 28, 2018 LonnieP, Thank you very much for that information. All of my fishing rods and reels are spinning. I do not own any casting rods and reels. Sometime, next week I will try a Spinner Bait. You take care and have a great week. 1 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted July 28, 2018 Super User Posted July 28, 2018 How well a spinnerbait fishes with a spinning rod/reel depends upon how heavy the spinnerbait is and how heavy the spinning rod power is. Mating a 3/4 oz spinnerbait with #6 blades with a medium power spinning rod doesn't fish efficiently. Casting spinnerbaits in the +1/2oz range is much easier with a baitcasting rod/reel than a spinning outfit. oe 1 Quote

Super User Mobasser Posted July 29, 2018 Super User Posted July 29, 2018 Jim, all of the above are true. You may do best with spinnerbaits in 1/4 to 3/8 oz, on your spinning reel. They can be productive with a fast retrieve near the surface, a slower retrieve mid water, or near bottom. Very versatile baits. Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 29, 2018 Author Posted July 29, 2018 OkobojiEagle, Sam and Mobasser, Thank you, for your replies to my questions. I sure do appreciate your help. I'll tie one on next week. Thanks again and have a great weekend. Quote
jbmaine Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Spinner baits on spinning rods work just great. Tues. morning I was throwing a chartreuse spinner bait in 7 ft of water. Let it hit bottom and retrieved just fast enough to keep it off the bottom. Caught this one and a few more. 1 Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 29, 2018 Author Posted July 29, 2018 Jbmaine, Thank you for your information. Next week, I must try them. Thanks again. Hope you have a wonderful and safe Sunday. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted July 29, 2018 Super User Posted July 29, 2018 Definitely don’t have to be fished near the surface. I have most of my success with a spinnerbait by letting them sink for a second or two after they land, and then reeling them slow to keep them near the middle of the water column. Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 29, 2018 Author Posted July 29, 2018 Jar11591, Thank you for that information. I fill like I have learned more about spinner baits in the last 36 hours. I definitely learned a lot more about them. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted July 29, 2018 Super User Posted July 29, 2018 Spinnerbaits are effective fished deep . When fishing deep i like for it to stay close to the bottom so will either hop it like a plastic worm , or after a few turns of the reel handle , let it fall back to the bottom . I prefer single spins with a ball bearing swivel for this type of fishing . A good lure is the Strike King Mini spin with some extra weight added to the hook shank . I use a 1/8th ounce rubber core sinker with the rubber removed and pinch it on . They are also very snag resistant and can be fished where a lot of lures cant . I throw them in lay-downs and brush , then steer them out . You can get them to jump right over logs . Quote
Jim Sutter Posted July 29, 2018 Author Posted July 29, 2018 Scaleface, Thank you for your reply. All this information that I have received from you nice folks is great. Scaleface you take care and enjoy your Sunday. Quote

Steve1357 Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Last two weeks have been very hot in the south. I've been running spinnerbaits as slow as I can on bottom while still keeping the blades turning or wobbling at least. (this is a 300 acre shallow lake, average 6 feet) I like the 1/8 and 1/4 oz full size spinnerbaits with colorado blades, helps keep it off the bottom and running slower. The dollar black spinnerbait with single colorado blade at walmart is awesome around here. Quote
