GeorgiaSpotSticker Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I had my boat out this past week for a good long while.. It had set all winter, and took a while to crank, but it finally did... let it warm up real good etc, and it seemed to be running fine... untill I was heading back to the ramp... I decided to "open her" up... I let the hot foot down and trimmed her up and was amazed to see GPS speed at only 58, WOT. Now last year I easily got 68-70 WOT, trimmed up... Whats the deal??? Quote
Super User cart7t Posted February 9, 2008 Super User Posted February 9, 2008 How fresh was your gas? Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 9, 2008 Super User Posted February 9, 2008 Have you changed the load? My boat is very sensative to weight toward the front. Quote
GeorgiaSpotSticker Posted February 9, 2008 Author Posted February 9, 2008 How fresh was your gas? Stored the boat for winter with about a 1/4 premium tank... as of last week, I added 3/4 premium to it... Since then I'm down to about 1/2 tank or a little less... Quote

Super User Sam Posted February 9, 2008 Super User Posted February 9, 2008 When is the last time you had the compression checked? Maybe it is time to have the motor serviced and have them check the spark plugs, too. Something is not right and I suggest nipping it in the bud very fast before the weather turns and you want to back on the water. Quote
backpain... Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Could it be the water temperature differnce? Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 9, 2008 Super User Posted February 9, 2008 Boat will run faster in cold water and cool air than warm water and warm air. It's very common to gain 200 - 300 rpm during the winter with the larger V-6 motors. The real question is what was the rpm compared to before. Tach is a much better indicator of how it's running than speed. Speeds have a tendency to lie to you. Quote
surfer Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Check the spark plugs for a fouled plug. Always start with the cheapest easiest fix them move on to the next cheapest easiest. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 9, 2008 Super User Posted February 9, 2008 I noticed you mentioned premium gasoline. Have you always run premium instead of 87 octane? Quote

NBR Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 I have never had this issue so my comments are right off the cuff and with no science or skill behind them. However, it sounds to me like you are not fireing on all cylinders or your prop is slipplng. This percent drop is significant and unless you have added a lot ofweight you just don't seem to be gerring the thrust out of the prop. Quote
NBR Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Sorry, my typing skills are worse than my mechanic slills and both are better then my proof reading. gerring was intended to be getting Quote
Super User Tin Posted February 9, 2008 Super User Posted February 9, 2008 Also was the tank full when you stored it? If not you could have water in the gas from condensation. My prof at the tech school I attended said this is a huge issue these days and the most common problem after winter storage. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 9, 2008 Super User Posted February 9, 2008 I noticed you mentioned premium gasoline. Have you always run premium instead of 87 octane? Yes. I've always run Premium through it. I was told to never run anything over 87 in my Opti. It even states in the manual to run 87. I am not saying this is your problem but it is several $ difference in fuel bills. Quote

I decided not to change that up... I don't have to fill the tank much but when I do, it ain't cheap. Reckon it will hurt anything switching to 87? If it states that in the manual, I'll be sure to start running it... I dont think the grade of gas is the problem... Thanks! Dropped it off at the dealer today to fix a the leaking trim tabs, hydraulic fluid was leaking pretty heavily. Got quoted for about $400.. :-/ While it's there, I told him what was happening and asked him to check the plugs etc... Thanks for all the replies. Quote

Since then, I filled it up completely, and am down to about a 1/2 tank. Think all the bad gas has been run out of it? Quote

I would be concerned with bad old gas mixed with the new gas along with water in the tank. Quote
