blongfishing Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 One thing I have noticed is that a lot of southern anglers I know (NC, SC, GA) don’t throw tubes. At least anglers that I know of. Any guys from the southern states throw tubes? I honestly haven’t done much research on them and how to fish them because it’s unheard of here. Maybe I should try them if no one else’s uses them! maybe I’m just crazy. Let me know!! LOL Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I tried liking them but just never got a single bite on one. I had over 20 packs of the strike King tubes I just sold in the flea market. 1 Quote
FishDewd Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 The only thing I've caught on tubes is catfish lol. I got 4 in one day once, in a bass pond! I tried all sorts of techniques... hopping them, dragging then, swimming them, lift and drop... those each got a catfish but not one bass! Not that I'm unhappy with catfish but it wasn't my target species on that day. I throw one occasionally still when nothing else is working, but no more action aside from that one crazy day. 1 Quote

I 100% agree that you don't see a lot of tubes thrown in the Southeast, which this may be a great opportunity to start throwing them. Quote
buzzbaiter83 Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I love throwing them on all the TN lakes. Dandy smallmouth bait and great when the LM bite is tough. It’s very underrated as a flipping bait Texas Rigged. It imitates so many different things. Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 27, 2018 Super User Posted July 27, 2018 Ive tried them off and on and think I may have caught one fish on them ever. One of the few so-called popular plastic baits Ive never done well on. 1 Quote
Djohn Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Here in VA it's a great river bait for both brown & green bass. Use a light and let the current do the work. Quote
crypt Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I use tubes for Carolina rigs and also flip em......a lot... Quote
DRT Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I live in WV so not exactly the "south", but tubes are a staple that I throw consistently. I texas rig them and have had good success on largemouths. Me and my fishing buddy sometimes travel down south and fish the carolinas and have had good success down there with tubes as well. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 27, 2018 Super User Posted July 27, 2018 Down here in the real south tubes were hot for awhile during the 80s but died off never to return. This die off coincided with the explosion of matted grass beds. In the last couple of years the grass died off & guess what lure is making a comeback? 3 Quote
thinkingredneck Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Never used them but interesting timing as I had just bought some to try. Quote
LxVE Bassin Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I live Indiana and still haven’t caught anything on a tube. But they work well here. I think I read somewhere that Florida Strain LMB aren’t as aggressive as Northern Strain LMB. Maybe that could be a factor in some places. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 28, 2018 Super User Posted July 28, 2018 The original "tube" was the Gizit. Invented in Arkansas, it was designed as a "do nothing" lure. Cast the Gizit out, put your rod down, light up a smoke and pop a top! Initially rigged on a jig head with an exposed hook. I fished them this way for years, but more recently have gone to inserted weights (weedless). The original Gitzit in "Baby Diaper Yellow" continues to be a staple in reservoirs on the White River (Beaver, Table Rock and Bull Shoals). I have have had good success with this on the Tennessee River. However, for smallmouth my "secret weapon" is the BPS Tender Tube #71. This and the Rage Tail Menace are my go-to below the Pickwick Dam. 2 Quote
greentrout Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Here in southern part of state never seen 'em used...highly likely they are used in Sardis & Pickwick reservoirs... good fishing... Quote
38 Super Fan Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 I've never done well with them. FLW did a tournament on Cumberland earlier this year and I remember some pros making the comment that they were surprised they couldn't catch fish on a tube there. Quote

LOL Senkos man, everyone throws Senkos. 15 years ago, I threw a lot of tubes whrn I lived in Illinois amd fished the mighty MS and the rivers that fed it. I have not tossed a tube in a long time, but there is only so much room in my kayak. Quote
volzfan59 Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 I use the Strike King Bitsy Tubes all the time. One of my go to baits in the river. Quote
GReb Posted July 30, 2018 Posted July 30, 2018 I’ve had a lot of success on green pumpkin tubes here in central MS. Especially around cypress trees, docks, and shallow structure. I’ve always just t-rigged them with 1/8 oz bullet weight and fished them similar to a crawl or creature bait. Don’t fish them as often as I should admittedly. Also like someone commented, I’ve also caught several nice 5+ pound catfish on white tubes. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 31, 2018 Global Moderator Posted July 31, 2018 I have bags and bags of tubes that I've never opened. Don't even think about them. Considering the moderate to heavy vegetation I fish in I think there are better options. Mike Quote
