Dad got hooked

Wasn't even at the lake for 15 minutes before I hooked into a decent pike, I went to boat flip it and my dad grabbed the line and the fish was flopping around and drove one point of the treble into his finger on his left hand. He went to stabilize the fish with his right hand and the same hook went into his thumb. I felt absolutely terrible and knew how painful it was. 

I immediately cut the line, unhooked the northern and assessed the situation. Deemed it best to cut the hook in half so he wasn't handcuffed by the hook anymore. Then we sat down, calmed our nerves and decided it wasn't something I could do in the boat without anesthetics. So we drove to the doctors office where they did a terrible job. They didn't have anything to cut the rest of the hook so I had to go back out to the boat and grab the wire cutters. Then the doc couldn't grip the cutters hard enough to cut the shank so I had to step in to do that.. 2 hours at the doctors. 

All in all, dad is fine and in good spirits about it. It's something to laugh at now. He's a great dad and person. I just feel terrible it happened on my boat.

Ouch that looks painful, I almost got a handful of trebles mutiple

times, whenever I use treble hooks now I always use the boga grips to secure the fish .. glad he is ok.. hope it was at least a big northern lol

Thankfully it was only a skinny 25" pike. If it was bigger it would have just been more painful. The fish was still hooked when he got the hooks in his hands. All the weight of the fish was pulling on the hook. I felt so terrible.

Hopefully he gets a discount on the doctors bill for using your tools and muscle. LOL

We joked about that with the doc and he didn't seem amused. lol

I went to the clinic and they borrowed pliers from the maintenance guy .

This does work....maybe not with same hook stuck in two hands, but it would have worked for one of them....sorry...I'm not scrolling back up to see which

WOW, that looks bad. I bet he was glad when they got those hooks out. I am really careful in my old age. If the fish was got a mouthful of hooks, I use my plastic grippers.

By the looks of that hook placement it would have worked good and saved a doctor visit a good day on the water.

This is what happens when your dad grips it and rips it when you’re 5. Hook went in right at the crease in that joint. The hook also left the crease of that joint. ?

About 12" of 80lb braid and two key rings. I've used it 3 times only once on myself, I think it's a must have tool especially if you fish alone.

I was offering him solutions to pull it out, but being one hook in 2 hands, it was gonna be a messy operation on the boat. He was in some pretty good pain too, he wanted to go to the walk in and I wasn't about to argue with a guy with a hook in both his hands. And he ain't no puss when it comes to pain. I've seen this man dislocate a shoulder and slam it against a wall to put it back in.

 I've gotten one in the fingertip before and it's one of the more painful things I've felt besides tearing both my ACL's.

Good illustration of the required "on the water" tool. And, that is the operation of it, how to use it, I have always seen where someone compresses the hook in a manner so that when the hook comes back out, the barb misses the most flesh.

 

If one were fishing alone, it might be problematic to press it down for the yank, but it depends on where the hook is lodged. Or, find another to assist.

 

I think I'll cobble one together and carry it along with me. I rarely use trebles, hate the things, and I have a pair of fish grips with me all the time, use them frequently.

 

Happens to pros, too. Have ya'll ever heard Jimmy Houston talking about the time he was on a boat with his sometimes business partners, Roland Martin and Bill Dance when Martin made a large counter-swing for a long cast, caught Dance right on the top of his skull, then accelerated the rod forward to make his cast. Dance apparently started yipping, who wouldn't, and trying to get Martin to stop, Martin didn't know he had him snagged, was yanking around, Dance's blood flowing finally made Martin a believer, Dance already WAS, of course. Houston is a great story teller, a video of him reciting the event is a hoot. 

 

A hoot likely for anyone but Bill Dance (or anyone with a hook inside his or her flesh!).
