Super User flyfisher Posted January 21, 2019 Super User Posted January 21, 2019 I have a tough time saying a non-call cost a game as well, especially given how they let them play al game. There were lots of missed calls this game as were every game this season Brees had a shot to win it in OT and couldn't do it. 1 Quote

Maybe you could say that Tom Brady has won more rings than any other white dude from the Bay area who is married to a supermodel & prefers deflated footballs. That would be factually correct. 2 Quote

As far as players, Charles Haley (49ers & Cowboys) also has 5 rings, but since you don't follow football closely, I figure you wouldn't know what a great player he was and his history in the Super Bowl. Haley was certainly a great player but was not the catalyst for any of those wins. Quote

There were a couple of calls that could have been made but that is how all games go. The NFL has apologized to the Saints right after the end of the game saying the ref blew the simple pass interference call. And no, that is not how all games go. Especially in the NFL where only the top rated refs are allowed to call a game. The refs in the AFC title game are much better than the ones selected for the NFC playoff. Saints won the game but got screwed by the refs. One would think that at least one ref on the field would have throw their flag to call pass interference on that play. The Super Bowl will have a second class team from the NFC playing one of the two very good teams from the AFC due to the refs cheating. Hope the ref who blew the call is no longer an NFL ref in the future. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 21, 2019 Super User Posted January 21, 2019 Assuming this is accurate, the refs are, in fact, to blame. If call was made, game would have been over. Simple as that. From NFL Network's Ian Rapoport Twitter report: #Saints coach Sean Payton referenced it post-game: Senior VP of Officiating Al Riveron did, in fact, acknowledge the missed call vs the #Rams to Payton. The NFL admitted its error — the call should have been have defensive pass interference, source said. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted January 21, 2019 Super User Posted January 21, 2019 Hey guys, don't bring logic and the NFL admitting the call was wrong to this conversation. Some people already have their mind made up that the call didn't make a difference. The call/no call ABSOLUTELY cost the Saints the game. BTW, I am not even a Saints fan, just a sports fan who saw the obvious. 1 Quote

I was pulling for Brees, but told my wife either team would be fine. I just wanted a fair game all around. Quote

That no-call shouldn't have mattered. 1 Quote

Wow, that is a stretch. It was a tie game when the play happened, if pass interference had been called, it still would have been a tie game. One might think that the Saints would have taken 3 knees to wind the clock down, but the way Payton was calling plays near the end, that isn't a lock. Then the kicker would have had to make the kick, with the Rams doing everything in their power to block it (I believe they had 3 blocks this year). With some of the things that have happened to the Saints in the playoffs over the years, no field goal, no matter how short, is a gimme. So yes, it was a bad break that the ref didn't make that call. However to say it cost the Saints the game or call the Rams a second class team is extremely melodramatic. To ignore the fact that they didn't make any other pass interference calls on about a half dozen plays that could have been called earlier in the game is disingenuous. These are two evenly matched teams and this particular afternoon, the Rams won. Quote

I believe Charles Haley could beat up both you and I simultaneously while also eating a ham sandwich and juggling 3 chainsaws. You apparently missed the original post. Mr "I-don't-watch-football-but-I-love-the-Patriots-they-are-the-greatest-ever" had stated that Monsignor Tom Brady had won more Super Bowl rings than anyone. Not more than any offensive player, not more than any other QB, not more than all of the people despised by Drew Bledsoe, but by anyone. Period. I corrected him, and told him about Mr. Haley. Quote

My points were just that the entire game was being called that way, so the non-call was consistent and that a non-call didn't cost the Saints the game. They had opportunities to stop the Rams from marching down the field to tie the game, they had the opportunity to go down and score first and they had the opportunity to stop the Rams from making the winning field goal. They didn't and that contributed to the loss. Is that fair? 1 Quote

OCdockskipper Posted January 21, 2019 Posted January 21, 2019 How about another OT game? 39 seconds is a lot of time... Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted January 21, 2019 Super User Posted January 21, 2019 It could happen. Not a fan of either team. I think what Brady and Bilicheck have done is amazing, but Mahomes is absolutely a thrill to watch play. I get to watch a lot of KC games living in Oklahoma and he is a talent. Another OT game.....I think this is a first that both the AFC and NFC have went to OT in the Conf finals. 2 Quote

Super User Darren. Posted January 21, 2019 Super User Posted January 21, 2019 Wow. Gotta hand it to Brady. Play calling at line of scrimmage, sure-handed receivers, another trip to SB. Hate 'em as much as I do, Brady is amazing. Quote
