Buffdaddy54 Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 I was talking to a friend of mine who worked at a golf course with me back in the day. We were talking about a club tournament we ran where the players all had to play the same ball, the same 3 clubs (I.E. driver, 5 iron, wedge) Which got me to thinking, I would love to see a fishing tournament where the pro's were only allowed to use 1 rod, 1 reel, same 5 baits, and lets say the line you were allowed to use was flourocarbon. Ifyou were involved what would be your choices? Mod's I was not sure where to post this. Actually let's expand this a little: 3 day tournament, each day a different line but same 1 rod, 1 reel deal. Super User roadwarrior Posted July 26, 2018 Super User Posted July 26, 2018 Fishing my local ponds from the bank I usually only carry one rod and two or three baits. A typical day right now is this set-up: 7' spinning rod & reel #6 Seaguar Tatsu Rage Tail Structure Bug, GYCB Senko and Fat Ika Quote

Logan S Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Sort of related to the topic...But in one of the early BASS Classics Stren was the 'official line of the Classic' and all the competitors used the same line. I can't play along with the scenario...I go crazy enough trying to slim down to 18 or 20 rods in the boat most of the time so getting to 1 would probably make my head explode ?. 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted July 26, 2018 Super User Posted July 26, 2018 No tourneys for me, so for 1 rod, 1 reel, 1 boat it would be my: 6' (now 5'9") Premiere Stradic CI4+ 1000 15# yellow PP SuperSlick braid + leader My trusty kayak, or a center console 18' skiff. I'd fish a TRD, versatile for me either Ned or dropshot. Quote

BankBasser Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 I've caught more fish pond hopping with a 7' m/f spinning outfit than any other outfit I have. That'd be my 1st choice. Edit: Whacky rig, small t-rig, tubes, neko, small finesse jig. Quote

Super User Deleted account Posted July 27, 2018 Super User Posted July 27, 2018 Depends on where and when one is fishing doesn't it? But no matter how many outfits are laying on the deck, you are still only fishing one rod at a time, so that's not really where the difference is. We fish a lot of salt water tournaments, with all sorts of rules, and for the most part bring some scratch home no matter what sort of silly rules they come up with. Those who understand the challenge and adapt accordingly will more often than not come on top, everyone else will make excuses. Quote

I will postulate that picking a single combo is less stressful then picking three or four combos. Also most of my rods are pretty versatile tapers so picking just one is mosly a function of the cover I think I will be fishing the most on a given day. Quote

Yea I was mostly joking ...I do have a "I need to have everything available to me" type of mentality when it comes to rods/reels though. All of the places I fish I could get by with a 7' M/F spinning rig with 10lb braid (if leaders are allowed, if not I'd make it 8lb FC). I agree picking 1 is easier than a couple...Because you just go with the most utilitarian or universal thing you have. Quote
fishindad Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Besides bass fishing, I play a little golf and used to be a serious age-group triathlete in the 80's. Look up speed golf in the Guinness Book of WR and you'll see some amazing feats. Guy in '82 played 18 holes regulation - one ball, running with two clubs (one each hand) - in just under 30 minutes! Another guy in NZ played 237 holes of golf, no cart, in 12 hours, logging 62 miles of running total! Guy was some ultramarathoner. Back to topic, not knowing the lake, for a 3-day Largemouth tournament I'd have a 6'10"MH rod, 7:1 reel, and 12 lb FC pitching a jig, T-rig, Senko, or Ika to every piece of cover or weedbed on the lake. For a smallie tourament I'd use a 7 foot M spinning rod and either dropshot plastics or throw a tube. Now if it was who could catch the most (not biggest) fish over 3 days it would be a Ned Rig on spinning gear. Boat wouldn't really matter as it just gets me from point A to point B. Wouldn't need a rod locker or storage compartments for tackle, lol! Quote
diversity210 Posted July 28, 2018 Posted July 28, 2018 Im no tournament angler, but I i had to choose 1 rod, 1 reel, and 1 line. It would simply come down to what time of year it was for me. I know some would have a hard time with this, because they have 25 rods on the boat with them when ever they go out. I dont carry as many rods as some but I do carry quite a bit. Last count I had about 13 combos on my boat. I still dont think it would be a hard choice for me though. Spring through summer it would be: 7' Dobyns Champion rod (DC704SF) Medium/Heavy Fast action Lews Pro Magnesium Speed Spool 6.8:1 Suffix 832 braid 15lbs If leaders are allowed it would be 20 lbs braid with seagar abrazx 12 lbs leader Winter 6'6" Duckett Micro Magic Medium rod fast action Shimano Stradic Spinner reel Seagar InvizX 8lbs fluorocarbon Quote
Chance_Taker4 Posted July 28, 2018 Posted July 28, 2018 Just give every competitor the same spinning combo and a couple bags of Senkos and have fun. 1 Quote

crypt Posted July 28, 2018 Posted July 28, 2018 club I used to belong to would do a one lure tourney every year. and we all would put our choice in a hat and someone would pull it out and that's what we would use. was the one tourney that everyone looked forward to every year cause we didn't know what the lure was going to be.and as tourney director it was my job to inspect all the boats prior to takeoff. also it was a draw tourney. would do the draw the morning of tourney to keep it as honest as can be. lot of fun. 1 Quote
