I already have 5 Ugly Sticks 1 5'10 and 4 6'0 i feel like i can cast those way further than those giant 7' rods?

Would yall suggest to get a 7' rod ? like am i just doing things wrong ? keep in mind i bank fish and kayak fish and sometimes the bank is suitable for 1 person max at certain places and i also feel like a 7' rod would be tough to use in a yak.

Going to take a trip to Bass Pro on Friday and splurge a bit on myself so want to get the great people of Bass Resources opinions well before i go :)

I bank fish a ton and I love a 7’ rod. I use to only use rods in the 6’6” range and now everything but 1 is 7’ or longer. Casting distance has dramatically improved, control on the fish, power in the rod just like everything about it.

i don’t do any fishing from a kayak but have been told by a few that a little bit longer rod can help with controlling the fish if it takes off under or around the kayak as you can swing out around the front which makes sense. But I could definately see some negatives to a longer rod as well in a kayak

I will suggest you get a rod in a length you're comfortable with. For me that 7.5' and longer. Yes, I fish from the bank and a kayak too.

If you're serious about fishing, might want to replace your ugly sticks too while you're at it. You can thank me later.

Longer rods have their advantages.  Try something like a 6'9 rod length. It is a very nice compromise. The bit shorter length gives me a little bit more ability to make casts under docks or over hanging trees.  I have a Powell Max 683CEF MH I love. It is a super versatile rod.  Dobyns, Irod and St Croix all make some nice rods in that size. You would have to probably order any of them or look for a dealer near you, but they are worth it.

I thought the same way until i invested in a specialized rod suggested by this exact forum, and the difference is remarkable.  Weight, balance, sensitivity, performance, the list goes on.  But then again, i caught my PB on a 60$ combo from Bass Pro Shop that i got 5 or 6 years ago.   Just a newbies 2 pennies after purchasing my first specialized rod and really noticing a difference.

I learned how to throw Skitter Pops and other poppers on 5'10" Ugly stick from a Kayak, loved those rods! I have traded them in at BPS trade in sales and now have Fenwick and St.Croix Rods which are lighter to throw all day IMO

They're fine rods. They used to be known for being nearly indestructible, and they were widely available from places like Wal-Mart, Bass Pro, sporting goods stores, etc. Nowadays, most rods on the market are just as tough, but things have changed and most rods you see recommended here will outperform an Ugly Stik in the ways mentioned above.

I'm a little biased toward Ugly Stiks too, because of my dad and my experience with them when I was a kid, but any Ugly Stiks I have now are used for sitting on a sandbar and fishing for catfish.

Rod length affects casting distance, but not as much as people let on.  It's far more important to have a rod that loads properly with the weight of the lure you are casting.

It's also more important to be comfortable with the length of the rod than derive any marginal gain or loss in casting distance IMO.

Also, nothing wrong with an Ugly stick.  They may be a little heavier or less sensitive than a higher dollar graphite rod.  Is it worth the extra $$$? To me it kinda is.

I used to be very myopic with equipment. It was all about the reel. That was it. To me a rod was a rod was a rod. After satisfying most of my curiosities in baitcaster land, I developed an itch to discover (if there was anything to discover) realities in the world of fishing rods.

Yes, I was very used to Ugly Sticks, and many many "token" rods. My first "better" rod was a Shimano Crucial. This was a noticeable leap. All my previous rods felt like "noodle" rods in comparison; even though the rods were rated the same. Over time after purchasing rods from St. Croix, McCain, and Duckett it's easy to see and feel how these rods truly rate among the folks that "know"...

Ditch the ugly sticks for bass fishing unless you’re cranking there is no sensitivity if you’re fishing a bottom bait like a worm or jig.
