Inshore ?

I'm gonna be going to Punta Gorda ,Fl area in next couple of weeks I read that area is known for redfish,snook and sea  trout.I bought the Penn battle 2 combo 4000 series,I have 30lb power pro braid on  it,I have limited saltwear tackle,what would you recommend to use and do I still need a leader on it seeing I put on 30lb power pro braid? Thanks!!!

3-5 feet of 40-60 pound mono is usually enough leader for small/average size snook,juvenile tarpon,redfish, and jack crevalle. You can go up to 80-100 pound mono leader if you are fishing for big snook,tarpon but the thick line might decrease the amount of bites you get. You can also use 20-30 pound mono leader to get more bites but you might get cut off more often.

Thanks for info!I was thinking of just putting on spoon and walking around the area.

I use 30 pound flouro leader for everything down there except tarpon. A spoon is a good bait. However if you want to catch everything under the sun get some 1/8 and 1/4 ounce jigs and tip them with 4 inch mirror lure swim baits in the clear or white. gulp shrimp on those same jigheads will also catch a bunch of fish.

Thanks guys so I need a fluoracarbon leader because the will see the 30lb braid?Hope that's not a dumb question lol

Best bet is always to stop in a local tackle shop and get some current, local advice.  Spoons, mirrodines, DOA shrimp and DOA shad tails are generally pretty safe bets though.

 

Yes to the leader question.  No to the swivel - just tie a good braid to leader knot.

I prefer to use a double uni knot for line to line

it has nothing to do with seeing it

 

all of these fish have teeth

 

they cut through braid

You are welcome. Spoons are good lures to use for inshore fishing. Other good lures are the following;

Poppers

Spooks

Jerkbaits

Jigs with soft plastic trailer

Bucktail jigs

Lots of guys prefer using flourocarbon when inshore fishing but I prefer using big game mono for leader material. It's cheap, extremely abrasion resistant, and I catch a lot of quality fish on big game mono. I prefer using a uni to uni knot when tying a mono leader to braid. For the lure knot I use a uni knot or Rapala knot.

Thanks guys for all great info I went ahead and ordered a hurricane redbone inshore rod 7'med action for my Penn battle 2 /4000 series didn't like the rod that came with battle 2 plus got a great price on rod almost 50% it's normal price
