Basstrd Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 ...jigs, frogs, ChatterBaits, Crankbaits and such. I have a spinning rod I use for soft plastics and lighter stuff. I have a casting reel and want to get a rod for these heavier applications. I am primarily bank fishing for bass. Thanks. Quote
kenmitch Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 Welcome aboard. It's a nice place to lurk as well as learning a lot about the world of fishing! The baits you listed sound more like a multiple rod solution too me from what I've been reading around here at least. Cabelas has the St Croix split handle Premier casting series on sale currently. The 7' MH Fast is in stock for $110 which is worth a look and see at least. Looks like a nice rod for the sale price at least. 1 Quote
TylerT123 Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 You probably need at least 2 Rods to cover those. Most people like Medium/Moderate for cranks/chatterbaits. With Jigs/Frogs people use MHF or HF. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 22, 2018 Super User Posted July 22, 2018 Academy's H2O is good place to start ? 1 Quote
Beetlebz Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 If you stick to heavier crankbaits, you can make a longer heavy fast rod work. It won't be ideal for the cranks, but I've done it in a pinch. Its actually kinda nice having so much rod for deep cranks and mag cranks. While its not my go-to solution, I often throw 3/8 and up chatterbaits on a heavy fast rod when I'm trying to cover water. It'll be perfect for 3/8 and up jigs, heavy texas rigs, Carolina rigs... with the right reel and the right line a long (say 7'4" and up) heavy rod you can do an awful lot. Quote
MichaelCopeland Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 Lew's American Hero MHF for around $70 or an All Star Nano MHF right at $100 at Academy. ? Quote

Whatever two weight ranges you throw most should be covered. Quote
Basstrd Posted July 23, 2018 Author Posted July 23, 2018 I actually think my current spinning rod can handle most lightweight crankbaits. It’s just ChatterBaits and jigs with trailers feel heavy on that rod. That’s why I’m wanting my casting rod to be able to handle jigs and frogs. Quote

The premier is a very durable rod, one of my all time favorites. I got a vendetta last year I liked, but unfortunately it broke on me. I got a Fenwick HMX recently that I like. Bass x feels nice, much like the old mojo but maybe a bit better balanced. A 7’mh from most manufacturers will handle jigs fine, just dial your drag back when fishing cranks. Quote
