Wesley Owen Purtee Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 I’m throwing the whopper plopper 90 and wondering what size line I should be using? I’m currently using 10lb power pro braid. Quote
evilcatfish Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 For topwaters of that size I like 15lb straight mono, but a little heavier or lighter is fine. 30lb braid is popular too and works well Quote

Super User Angry John Posted July 22, 2018 Super User Posted July 22, 2018 10 lb braid is to light and if you get a backlash it will break off. I have used mine on 30 pp, 14lb xl or 10lb yhb. They all work just fine. Quote

Wildbillb Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 I use 12 mono. Keep a high hold on the retrieve to keep line off the water at much as possible. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted July 22, 2018 Super User Posted July 22, 2018 Never seen a reel that recommends braid but the new ones may. If spinning the 20 is my favorite size, on a small bait caster like alphas 30 is good and 40 on a full size bait caster and up. Doing any harm is unlikely but possible I have only damaged one spinning reel that had braid on it and it was on a bait that was a single hook that I gave more heat than I should have on the set. Braid is strong but light braid does not take shocks well. I still have casted off lures with 20 on an alphas but nothing 30 and up. I use a lot of 8 Carrier but the 20 cast off was a 6 carrier braid. Dont know factually how different carriers effect shock performance but very curious. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 22, 2018 Global Moderator Posted July 22, 2018 I use 10lb braid on spinning reel, 20lb braid on baitcaster for the 90 size. Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 20 lb Sufix 832 is my standard on bass spinning reels for most techniques, including topwaters. I bank fish and just use 2 to 3 rods every time out, so I lean towards versatility . I use 10 lb 832 on a lighter outfit for more finesse stuff. Quote
