Super User J Francho Posted February 21, 2019 Super User Posted February 21, 2019 That's a beast! This is one of my favorite smallmouth pics, taken right after a huge leap by the boat. 3 1 Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted February 22, 2019 Super User Posted February 22, 2019 If I sound like I’m complaining I’m not... but I’ve caught easily 150+ Smallmouth over 5 lbs... yet I’ve never cracked 6 lbs... (my annual goal for about 10 years running now). To say 6 is not a trophy is a bit absurd to people like me. Many of the 21 inchers I’ve caught have been river fish (like the one in my photo) and I can say without hesitation that they’d outfight a much larger lake LMB. A different animal... and in a class by themselves. 2019 goal (again) 6 lb Bronzeback 2 Quote

It's all about the fisherie, misspelled on purpose. 1 Quote

Maybe it was the current helping them during the fight but I have to think that a river smallie has to have more muscle and power to survive in the never-ending current whereas a lake resident doesn't. Our lake smallmouth fight really hard because they can dive deep, something not really possible in the rivers. They go from jumping into the air to 15 feet down really quick Quote

There are currents in lakes. Some so powerful, a swimmer can drown. Quote

Rivers and lakes are one and the same in TN. Right now the upper ends of the lakes are moving about 4 mph Quote

Alex from GA Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 The place I live isn't smallmouth country although I've caught several up 3 lbs and the hardest fight I've had were with Alabama(spotted) bass. I fish several times a week and catch 3 to 1 Alabamas vs LM. A 13 to 17" spot fights much harder than a LM of the same size. We have, in GA, a bass slam put on by the GA DNR for 10 species of black bass if anyone is interested. Quote

Yumeya Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 I lost a 5lb largemouth a couple days ago, I thought I had about a 3lb smallmouth until I got her up to the boat and she jumped and spit out my rig pound for pound smallmouth fight harder then largemouth. Here is a few pics. Quote
cyclops2 Posted October 12, 2019 Posted October 12, 2019 The smallie is almost always in a school & moving around. Chasing bait...…….. Has way more power & speed & endurance. The way it is. You kayak guys talk to gators & crocs ? or just let them take the big ones ? Quote

Mr. Aquarium Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Wish smallies got as big as largemouth. Imagine fighting a 10, 15 or -20lb smallie Quote

My experience is that river smallmouth bass fight harder for their size but I still rather catch another +8 pound largemouth bass. I have caught most of the black bass species that have been identified and I would say the Suwannee bass gave me the best pound for pound fight. None of the black bass compare to peacock bass which is surprisingly strong for a freshwater fish. Have caught tarpon in the same waters I catch bass and those tarpon give the best overall fight of any fish that lives in South Florida canals. Quote
