That's a beast!  This is one of my favorite smallmouth pics, taken right after a huge leap by the boat.

If I sound like I’m complaining I’m not... but I’ve caught easily 150+ Smallmouth over 5 lbs... yet I’ve never cracked 6 lbs... (my annual goal for about 10 years running now).  To say 6 is not a trophy is a bit absurd to people like me.

Many of the 21 inchers I’ve caught have been river fish (like the one in my photo) and I can say without hesitation that they’d outfight a much larger lake LMB.  A different animal... and in a class by themselves.

2019 goal (again) 6 lb Bronzeback :)

I hear ya. I have caught 50+ smallies over six pounds but only one over 7 pounds. It's all about the fisherie, misspelled on purpose.

I'd even say that a river dwelling smallmouth fights harder than a lake dwelling smallmouth too.  Maybe it was the current helping them during the fight but I have to think that a river smallie has to have more muscle and power to survive in the never-ending current whereas a lake resident doesn't.

Our lake smallmouth fight really hard because they can dive deep, something not really possible in the rivers. They go from jumping into the air to 15 feet down really quick

There are currents in lakes.  Some so powerful, a swimmer can drown.

Indeed. Rivers and lakes are one and the same in TN. Right now the upper ends of the lakes are moving about 4 mph

A musky (or a pike) at the boat'll stop your heart...or start it.  'Specially if they're 40" or better, and it's topwater...

Imagine catching this...

The place I live isn't smallmouth country although I've caught several up 3 lbs and the hardest fight I've had were with Alabama(spotted) bass.  I fish several times a week and catch 3 to 1 Alabamas vs LM.  A 13 to 17" spot fights much harder than a LM of the same size.  We have, in GA, a bass slam put on by the GA DNR for 10 species of black bass if anyone is interested.

I lost a 5lb largemouth a couple days ago, I thought I had about a 3lb smallmouth until I got her up to

the boat and she jumped and spit out my rig :(

pound for pound smallmouth fight harder then largemouth.

The smallie is almost always in a school & moving around. Chasing bait...…….. Has way more power & speed & endurance.  The way it is.

You kayak guys talk to gators & crocs ? or just let them take the big ones ?

the vast majority of smallmouth bass fishermen consider a 6 pound smallmouth bass a trophy

Most of the SMB waters I fish requires me to catch two or three fish to get a trophy ...  Still, the smallies in MA fight harder than larries too.

How do you guys think spotted bass stack up against the brown and green?

A 2-3 pound smallmouth bass is a quality sized one, regardless where you catch it. My experience is that river smallmouth bass fight harder for their size but I still rather catch another +8 pound largemouth bass. I have caught most of the black bass species that have been identified and I would say the Suwannee bass gave me the best pound for pound fight. None of the black bass compare to peacock bass which is surprisingly strong for a freshwater fish. Have caught tarpon in the same waters I catch bass and those tarpon give the best overall fight of any fish that lives in South Florida canals.

I heartily agree. I fish smaller waters from my kayak. I’ll take ‘em all!

Merry Christmas!

It depends on which spots. The ones in the Alabama river will take down small humans
