rtwvumtneer6 Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 I'm excited to say that I'll be fishing my first tournament in a few weeks!... And I need your help preparing! I always over pack. I just took inventory today, and based on the water I think I would be comfortable taking 5 rods... A dedicated cranking rod, flipping/frog rod, 2 all purpose rods, one fluoro one braid, and a drop shot/finesse spinning rod. I also have my tackle backpack for hard baits and terminal tackle/tools and a Plano bag for my soft plastics. So, 5 rods and two bags (about 25# total). Prob one other bag with waters and snacks, and rain gear if necessary. For you boaters, is that too much for a co-angler to bring? Also, any advice on etiquette or unwritten rules that might help would be appreciated. Trying to be efficient and respectful and have a good first experience. Thanks!! Quote
RichF Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 5 rods is good. 2 bags should be ok if theyre small. Some boaters will clear out a rear deck compartment which is always nice. Be polite, ask questions, and dont step on the seats to get on the back deck! Good luck!! Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 21, 2018 Super User Posted July 21, 2018 You don't need rain clothing unless rain is in the forecast. A simple rain parka fits anywhere for emergency purposes. Food, drinks and snacks shouldn't be a problem. 5 rod/reel combos are not an issue. Spare reel with fresh line is always a good idea. 2 small or 1 larger bag isn't an issue. Don't forget you sunglasses, hat and sunscreen/sun protection. If this isn't a blind draw event give the boater a call and talk it over. Tom Quote
Super User Angry John Posted July 22, 2018 Super User Posted July 22, 2018 Bring extra drinks. The boater might not need it but its a great way to break the ice. I love gatorade and having a spare has never been an issue. Its hot right now so a buff. full brimmed hat and a long sleeve shirt would be a great idea. I also did not see a life preserver on your list. I have my own from Kayak fishing and you are required to have one. You could check with the boater to see if he has one for you but it might not be one that you want to wear. I spent the money on a mustang hit vest and wear it all day while in the boat. Quote
rtwvumtneer6 Posted September 13, 2018 Author Posted September 13, 2018 Thanks @WRB @Angry John and @RichF Just wanted to check back and say thanks for all the advice. The tournament went really well. Placed in 1st with a 3 fish limit weighing 13# 7oz. Stuck 2 fish over 5 and won lunker with a 5# 10oz monster. Can't wait for the next event... I just hope it doesn't serve up too big of a piece of humble pie! 3 Quote
