bought a brand new 54” / 50lb theist Minn Kota trolling motor for my boat.

For some one reason the motor will only work on speed 2. It has speeds 0-10 but the prop will only spin on speed 2 and not with the foot pedal, but it automatically spins continuously until I change speeds.

I can however turn from left-right at any speed using the pedal but the prop won’t spin at all unless on speed 2.

when I hit the battery test button on the unit it says I have full charge so idk what the problem is.

my only theory is that my old trolling motor which was probably 10+ years old already had the plug and receptacle on my boat so I cut off the plug and wired the positive and negative from the minn Kota onto the old plug and used that. I don’t know if that could cause the errors though.

i did purchase a brand new Minn Kota plug and receptacle today so I’m going to try that when it comes in but idk if that will have any effect since I’m getting full power.

Try the new plug, but it might just be defective.

If the plug was bad, it probably would not work at all. If the motor is brand new, take it back ASAP and they might exchange it without going through the repair process.

Sounds like it came wired wrong from the factory. I would call Minn Kota.

Would the warranty be void since you cut and spliced the plug on a brand new trolling motor? I'm a short cut taking guy by definition but I probably would've avoided doing that.

There was no other way to do it. The positive and negative wire were only about 2 feet with terminals on them so I would have had to cut them anyways to run wire long enough to the battery or to put the right plug on it.
