Nunz Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 I just used a new Daiwa BG 3500 for a saltwater trip. i didn't get to clean it properly after the last trip out in the salt and now i can feel it is noticeably less smooth and sometimes gets stopped completely when i'm turning the handle. i took it apart and the grease looks fine, nothing looks dirty (this was the first trip i used it on). Any tips on how to clean and service this reel? i really don't know where to start. Quote
TylerT123 Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Get the schematic, take it apart in sections. Lay the parts on a few white paper towels so you can see them and for easy cleanup. Soak the bearings in rubbing alcohol, rinse with freshwater, let dry on a paper towel and give them a drop of reel oil made for use in saltwater. Look for corrosion or any signs of wear and I’d check the seals. Quote

bhoff Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Yea I usually just oil the bearings on either side of the spool, helps extend bearing life and increases smoothness. You can get a q-tip and clean the insides of them as well. Quote

What grease is commonly used for the spinning reel gears. From what im reading i should clean out the old grease with ispoprpyl, wash, dry, re grease and then oil the other parts of the reel? I saw a video where the guy sprayed the outside of his reel down with Remington gun oil. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 20, 2018 Super User Posted July 20, 2018 I degrease with Perfect Solution, rinse, dry. Depending on the situation, I have a few different greases I prefer. You can't go wrong using the grease from the reel manufacturer. You can call them and order direct. For bearings, they are soaked in acetone. Swirl around, and replace the acetone until it runs clear. Then dry, and one drop of oil at the edge of the shield. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted July 20, 2018 Super User Posted July 20, 2018 Since you're fishing brackish water, CONSIDER lubing all of the parts inside of your spinning reel with Penn's blue marine grease... inside walls of the body, gears, bearings, (and screw threads) everything greased very LIGHTLY. Also consider removing the spool and rinsing it thoroughly under the tap after each use. I don't think oiling the bearings of a spinning reel is important if you are using a light grease in its place... just my very un-professional opinion. oe Quote
