Boogey Man Posted July 19, 2018 Posted July 19, 2018 Don’t hear a lot about this rod as a lot of people prefer longer ones. I do a lot of close range fishing and am partial to shorter ones. I’ve read Dobyns runs a little lighter in power, I was wondering if anyone had this rod and what they used it for. It’s listed for mostly single hook lures like T-rigs, spinnerbaits and flukes, but I was wondering if it could pull double duty for smaller squarebills like Bandit 100’s or smaller poppers. Mostly for open water, not around much cover or vegetation. Quote
Robert Riley Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Hm. I have a 703, an old savvy. I'm sure the action is pretty similar. I use mine mostly for smaller spinnerbaits and squarebills. But it also works well with weightless plastics and light texas rigs. Quote

Several places near me sell Dobyns but not the 663C, which is why I’m a little hesitant about ordering it without being able to actually check one out in a store. Quote
Bent Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 I have the FR663 and I really like it for roll casting smaller spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, or occasionally poppers/chug bugs. It can definitely handle a squarebill. 1 Quote

Bent Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 I should stress it is a pretty light rod, definitely not comparable to a MH from most other brands. Quote

That’s actually what I was hoping. I’m scaling back my arsenal lol and starting to look for more “double duty” rods. Quote
Robert Riley Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 It's definitely a medium and not a medium heavy. You can always give dobyns a call, they know their stuff. Quote
BassFisher22 Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 When I bank fish i prefer to bring only one rod. A Dobyns Fury 703c is my go to all around rod. I throw some KVD 1.5 squarebills on the rod and it works fine. The 663c should treat you well. Quote
Backroad Angler Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 The 663c was one of my first rods I got for baitcasting, and I got it for using senkos and spinnerbaits mostly. I've had it for a little while now and It's a excellent rod, very senstive at the tip and its a light set up as well, not too heavy. I had gone to the lake for the weekend and did'nt bring enough rods/reels, so I really only had this one and a spinning set up. I used it for really everything except frogs lol. It tossed crankbaits very well, spooks and you name it, it did a pretty good job! Very versatile rod! 1 Quote
Boogey Man Posted July 22, 2018 Author Posted July 22, 2018 Just pulled the trigger on it, with the 20% coupon from the big auction site. I got it for $88 bucks. Quote
Pat33 Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 Congrats. Dobyns Fury are good rods for the price. I fish all Dobyns, Mostly Savvy and Sierra and one Champion. Quote
fluna Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 After reading this I ordered my first Dobyns rod 663c and will pair up with a Lews reel. 1 1 Quote
Boogey Man Posted August 1, 2018 Author Posted August 1, 2018 I haven't had the chance to fish it yet due to some health issues my wife has been having, but I think it will be a good rod. I'd almost call the action moderate fast vs fast, it flex a little further into the rod than a lot of fast action rods. Fit and finish are perfect. Quote
waymont Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Should be perfect for what you describe. I use 6'6" rods too. I love the Dobyns Fury 664 for my texas rigs, light frogging, and jigs. The 663 for all the stuff you mentioned. Great rods. Quote
