Met Ned today

I was walking up the boat ramp to get my truck and met Ned Kahde standing in his boat.

I had seen him on the lake several times but, our paths never crossed.

he had just finished for the day and struck a conservation on fishing that day.

Not surprisingly, he caught twice as many fish as I did.

what did surprise me is how modest he is. He is a wealth of knowledge and is willing to share everything.

One thing I did learn from him. Is the midwest finesse system is more than just a mushroom head with a TRD or Zinkerz.

they use several different baits on the mushroom head. 

He also does not call it the ned rig.

 

As we parted ways he gave me a Z man prototype bait called the TRD Crawz. it goes on the mushroom head just like a standard TRD

(it should be on the market in late summer)

Looks Like it has a lot of potential.

Very cool ? The two comments go hand in hand. Marketing and popularity has killed the understanding of the original system by using the term "Ned rig," a term Ned initially despised and refused to use himself. I believe even he has relented somewhat in this regard as there is no getting away from it anymore.

Meeting and speaking with the movers and shakers in the  bass fishing industry makes the sport more personal and friendly. Other than NASCAR, it is difficult to meet and speak with any other industry's inventors and research people on a regular basis.

 

Actually meeting people like Ned, Gary, Big-O, Bobby, Glenn, Keith Jones, and so many others who have given the sport their blood, sweat and tears to make a good product is something that we can be thankful for and embrace. We enjoy a sport that expects and wants this to happen.

 

Couple that to the pros who will stop and speak with you and take a photo or give you an autograph and you have one great sport where everyone shares information and helps each other.

Yep, he's very down to earth. Since I fish during the week and on the same lakes, we cross paths frequently. I've managed to make his Midwest Finesee report a time or two even. He's always willing to volunteer information and has lots of it to give. You're right that the pursuit of money has completely clouded what MWF fishing is all about.

What impressed me most about Ned is he is 78 years old and still pursuing those 100 bass days.

The day I met him, They only caught 48. A slow day I guess ?.

hope I can do that when I  reach that age.

I know there are several variations to the ned rig, but I thought that all came about with the recent popularity.

I did not realize, the original Midwest finesse guys, used so many different baits. 

I always thought they kept the bait selections to a bare minimum and just varied the retrieve.

The true original midwest finesse guys (started by Chuck woods) started out just as guys trying to catch a bunch of fish on the cheap, using things like Beatle spins and marrabu jigs.  This ran somewhat parallel to early slider fishing btw. This progressed through a few phases where certain techniques were popular until they started using small plastics on a small, light wire and small sized mushroom heads fished in shallow water.  A few years later the popularity of the technique exploded, resulting in zman marketing and labeling "Ned rig" components and have been riding that train introducing new plastics to capitalize on it since then, unfortunately muddying the waters as to it's definition. The new upsized components are trying to force fit it into something it isn't.

I love to fish the Holston. I hit it several times a year and I wish it was a little closer. Have you ever fished the Sevier Detention Reservoir? I hit it a few times a year too.

I don't believe that I've ever heard about the Detention Reservoir? I'm going to look it up though. The Holston is a great river to fish! I love to hit the Rogersville area and fish closer to home.

Rogersville is where I always go as well. The detention reservoir is where the old steam plant is in Rogersville and it’s a pretty good place to go fish.

Ned is the : "Bass Whisperer" ... I'm lucky if I can fish one or two of the Ned Rig retrieves - he has 6 retrieves that he uses !
