Thursday, I took the whole day off from work and headed north to the little town of Au Gres Mi.  Au Gres is located on the Au gres river which, empties into the Saginaw Bay and than lake Huron.  I left home at 7 am and after stopping at franks great outdoors ( never been before) for 2 stroke oil, Ned rig Worms , ned jigs, and other tackle.  I launched at the state launch at 10am.  I fished for almost 9 1/2 hours, anchored and had lunch on the bay. I was back at the launch and had the boat loaded up for home at 8pm. Originally I was after small mouth but, this was the first time I have had the boat out on the bay solo and I didn't really have the nerv to go out where the small mouth were in my 14 foot tin can ( its a big 14 foot deep-V though).

For the first 4 hours all I had to show for it was a nice size rock bass and 13 inch large mouth. It took me a while to figure it out. I ran about 2 miles down the coast to the next channel.  As I was coming through the channel almost to  when I watched another angler in a pontoon catch a large mouth in a large clump of reeds. After he left I slid in to the spot and with a Zoom finesse worm rigged wacky style I pulled 4 large mouths out in 5 minutes.  So finally I figured something out with some help.  Basically, I just cruised along the shore line while casting into the reeds and other brush along the shore line ( some of it was 100 yards from shore) and when it was all said and done I had boated 20 large mouth.  Nothing too large but, all between 13-15 inches long.  I think 12 came on the wacky rigged pumkin colored Zoom finesse worm ( I think it is a finesse worm the place I bought it from had all the orginall ID and upc codes covered up). This was also the first time I have ever had success on a wacky worm set up.  The other bass came on a green pumkin Christie critter t-rigged.

Talking with other angles I now have a good idea where the small mouth are for next time

I’ve grown up fishing Lake Michigan. I have seen some ridiculously stupid things on the lake in pursuit of salmon. Boats like mine trying to fish out to the bank which is 2-3 miles out of Frankfort where it goes from 70ish feet of water to sbout 140 in 5 foot of length.

I  Figure my fishing radius is about 2-3 miles from shore while fishing most of the bay on a really really good day. Ive done 4-5 miles out before in the boat from quincassee area but,I wasn’t alone and it is shallower on the south end. I still had my hand held marine radio with me though.

I don’t have a problem following the coast for a long ways I figure if weather came up worse case is I could beach it untill it blew through. however, being way out there in a 14 footer isn’t for the faint of heart.
