Hey guys sorry if this has been covered already. I am in the market for another rod and reel setup. It will be mostly for treble hook style baits (crankbaits, poppers) I want something in the 7' to 7'6 range. I'm trying to do this on a budget.. right around 200 for the combo. I think I have two rods narrowed down (lews tp1 or shimano exage) but I am open to suggestions. Reels are another story. I have no idea where to begin. Thanks in advance.

Dobyns fury or colt 705 cb are good rods for a budget. The tp-1 speed sticks are good but I'd still rank them lower than the fury. Never handled an exage.  then pick up a daiwa fuego on eBay for about $65. Then you have an awesome set up for under budget

Yeah! That fury is really nice, and so is the 7'3" Lew's TP1. I use the TP1 bc I wanted a longer rod and I'm a big fan.

As far as the reels go, you can find a lot around that $100 mark. I would recommend the Lew's Speed Spool, but you can find the TMB or similarly priced reels (~$130) for around that price point. I would recommend just looking around these forums, and seeing what you can catch on sale. As far as a specific reel, I'd stick to a 6:1 gear ratio, but it really doesn't matter these days.

All depends on what you like. I just got a Bass Pro Crankin Stick to replace something that cost more because it had the best action I could find for light baits. Only $79.99. It might sound funny, but I’d pick this over almost anything.

My recommendation may be a bit strange but here goes....

I have a Shimano Calcutta and a Fenwick Elite Tech Heavy Moderate that I love. It throughs cranks country mile and I like the slow retrieve of the Calcutta.  So I going to recommend something similar.

I know this is out of the price range by a few bucks but I would recommend a round reel (Shimano Cardiff 200A) and a Fenwick Elite Tech Moderate taper.  The reel can be found on amazon for $115 and the rod for $100 on amazon and few other online retailers.  Both are bullet proof tanks that will hold up to everyday fishing.

My favorite reel  is my crankbait reel . Its a Johnny Morris  with a  5 something to 1 ratio . I suspect a combo could be purchased for 200 dollars .

I have been using a Lews David Fritts Perfect Crankbait rod with a Lews BB1 5.1:1 ratio. Can't see me going to something else anytime soon. If you shop around you can get both for under $200.

Thanks a lot guys. For all you guys that have specific crankin rods.. are they all a moderate taper? I have read a lot about using moderate taper for better hook up ratios and hook sets with treble hook baits.

I use Mod/Fast Taper which gives the perfect combo for the bass to inhale it :)

The Dobyns Colt or Fury rods referenced the "CB" is Crank Bait meaning moderate action for treble hook lures. You get a reasonable price point with good customer service from Dobyns. 5 per power maybe a little too high for poppers in the 1/4 oz size and 7' maybe a little long for poppers, a compromise may be a 704CB, unless your primary use is deep diving crank baits in 5/8-1oz sizes.

I'm using a 6'6" med fast vendetta throwing mainly lipless cranks. Always get the bigger ones in with it. With the little feisty ones sometimes it's the Jimmy Houston professional quick release as he calls it.

poppers are not that much of a concern. I am more interested in crankbait fishing. I have a few lipless and a few squarebills and several jerkbaits that I want to have a rod for. All of them are 1/2 oz or less.

Which model St. Croix Legend Glass crankbait rod do you have and what weight crankbaits do you throw on it?

The baitmonkey has been telling me I should buy one of those but there aren't any stores that have them around me to check them out.

I have the MH, best with 1/2 oz cranks and up but does okay with 3/8 depending on the crank.

Its also amazing for lipless cranks.

Do it :)
