The last couple of fishing trips were hampered by mid-back pain . I took Alieve  three time to no effect .  Its the act of holding the rod away from the body , the  same thing happens when washing dishes .  For you guys who have this , how do you combat it ? I'm too the point where I'm going to ask the Dr for pain pills .

Advil is better then Alieve for muscle pain relief.

You need to stretch each morning before doing anything else. No lifting, No twisting, just easy streching using a strap, 1 hand over head the other behind your back and lightly pulling the strap up and down for a few minutes.

It can take some time to reduce inflammation, don't rush it.

Well, sir, I'm 28 years old and have had degenerative disc disease in my lumbar spine since I was 19. I can't stand for more than 20 minutes or sit for more than 20 minutes without back support, else I'm in pain, fidgeting back and forth, leaning on things etc. It's to the point now, where, my middle back is weakened and the muscles are in agony trying to keep me supported. Stupid strong pain meds and back support is all that helps. Option 2 is the knife, and no doctor will do that with me being so young because it can be devastating.

You sound exactly like me. Only I'm 51. I've had four back surgeries to alleviate numbness in my left leg from hurt discs. I can sit forever but standing and I'm just like you... fidgeting etc.  After the last of my surgeries I was referred to a rehab facility. They personalized a program to help strengthen my core muscles. Along with stretching it really helps. Maybe there is someplace near you. I pay a monthly fee like a gym but there's none of the hassle and posing like at standard gyms. I'm probably the youngest person there lol. If you can't do this find exercises on the internet and do them (with your doctors blessing).  My prayers for you.

I've had a herniated disc since senior year football in high school. L5 S1 herniation. 

I stretch before going out. I use a foam roller. It helps a bunch. I have my good days and bad days with pain, but it's always "tight". I find the roller loosens me up fairly well. 

Aspirin doesn't even begin to touch the pain and the hydrocodone the doctor has me on is worthless as well. I don't like being on any type of medication either so I just stick to stretching. My physical therapist has me do planks every night as well. The idea is to strengthen the muscles in the back so they don't get fatigued nearly as fast.

Iv'e had 3 lumbar surgeries and was scheduled for a 3 level fusion but I canceled it at the last minute. I wanted to fish this spring and not miss the season. I got referred to a pain doctor by a friend who had an RFA procedure done with great results. I had my 1st RFA done yesterday and will have the 2nd done in two more weeks and I'm confident this will help me. I think you might want to research this procedure.

Im 57 and have some lower back pain but It doesn't slow me down much yet.

Stretching does help if I make myself do it.

My wife had more serious back issues, so we bought her an inversion table. Her condition rapidly improved . This is after the doc. approved it.

  Most any Back pain is a bear and can really put a damper or worse a complete end to much of the things we love to do.   Over the years I've had my share.  The few times it was really bad I've been lucky enough to work myself back with a combination of rest & eventual 'physical therapy'. Sometimes it took a few weeks, other times several months.  Been able to avoid anything that required surgical intervention.   

 

  At 58, I still deal with some on & off, but rarely is it enough to keep me down for long.   Keeping myself lean & strong (relative term) seems to really help.  

Especially now.

Whoo, timely post. 4 weeks ago I bent over to take the keys 

out of my wife's car (after she got home from night shift and

I had to take my youngest to school)...and BAM, could barely

move, let alone straighten up.

 

Managed to get in the house, take some advil, etc...

 

Doc visit after 2.5 weeks and got some Flexeril and Meloxicam

to combat the pain. I also found some awesome exercises from

a guy online that helped.

 

Has kept me out of my kayak and out of fishing for the entire

4 weeks. Almost out of the woods. For me it was lower back,

so don't know if this'll really help your situation. But I also 

get pain when loading the dishwasher/doing dishes.

The only thing I have found is do some stretching.  Many times I stop fishing and do some back stretching in the boat.  The guy in the back just has to suffer along and cast as best as he can until I get done.

Rest will rarely cure back pain unless it’s just a muscle strain. You want to work on mobility & strengthen your core & erectors. Find a physical therapist who is actually fit & they will tell you the same. YouTube has some videos from good physical therapist with mobility videos. Kelly Starret & MobilityWod saved my back after years of Olympic Weightlifting with poor stretching.

My dad pretty much dropped a washer on me & I caught it bent over one day and destroyed my lower back. I have lifted weights all my life & I struggled for months no matter how much I rested or stretched. Found MobilityWod on YouTube and in a few weeks my lower back was almost 100%. Couch stretches, flossing the muscle with rollers & balls, & working on my piriformis & psoas fixed me. Then I did the necessary work to strengthen my posterior chain & core. Rarely does my yak give me soreness now.

??. @EGbassing I was building a house and had a bunch of stuff stored in his garage. It was coming a flash flood and we moved everything out in a hurry to my new place. He took a misstep getting out of the truck.

I might be taking a hack saw to some of my rod handles . They make them to long now days . I think if I hacked off a couple of inches , that would help a bunch .

Yep, I still use my old short pistol grips back up in the narrow creeks.makes it easier around the docks and overhanging limbs for sure.Fiberglass to boot

I keep a foam roller on the boat and roll out as soon as I start tightening up.  Most people neglect stretching their hamstrings........Don't  be like them.  They get a lot of work balancing you on the water and connect to your pelvis, and when tighten it strain L2-4, and the problems works it's way up

I'm not trying to make you worry, as I highly doubt you have the same problem I did. When I was around 350lbs, I'd get back pain from being on my feet all day. I lost 100lbs and nothing changed. Then I got diagnosed with colon cancer, had half my right colon removed and once I recovered, I was no longer was getting back pain. That said, I had back pain for years before I had the tumor as well.

 

The only over the counter drug that ever helped me was Advil, taking anything else was just pointless. And then I would have to lay on my back, on the floor for a while until it would pass.

.....In an effort to try and prevent the problem,I wouldn't hesitate to get orthotics.  Many of our problems stem from not having a stable platform.....which is our feet. Then I wear the proper foot wear, it helps. One Dr recommended 1/4 inch heal lifts to compensate for the angle of the  boat

67 yrs young! ?

 

3 ruptured discs (L4, L5, S1), torn ligaments,  sciatic nerve damage in the lower back.

 

Rheumatoid arthritis & calcium deposits in knees, elbows, wrist, fingers, shoulders & bone spurs in neck.

 

Aint slept more than 4 hrs at a time in 13 yrs, I go from laying, to sitting, to standing constantly.

 

Had to make adjustments in every part of my life not just fishing.

 

On a pain scale of 1-10 my average day is about an 8.

 

But with God's grace I aint had surgery, don't plan on having surgery, & aint on pain meds!

 

#1 stay active!

Stretching & exercise core muscles!

Stretching and long walks on flat ground are very helpful for back pain.Iv'e done it for many years in between multiple injuries.keep fighting!

I've been doing the plank exercises three times a day  .  Hopefully its a muscle thing . The only times this bothers me is fishing and washing dishes .

 Talk about multi-tasking . . . .

 Do the greasy pot & pans affect bass survivability in your live well ?

I've noticed I get lower back and tight chest from casting hard after not fishing for a while. I chalk it up to being out of shape. Casting on a moving boat is different than standing on stable dry land. Then, I'm 71 years old too so that probably plays a roll.

hate to hear about that scaleface. seems like we have a back pain thread two or three times a year. mine was so bad this winter that i went and had an MRI and then three months of physical therapy....and it worked. i maintain a core strength routine but sometimes i still feel it. i hope you are able to work through this. get well soon man.
