Last year my time on the water was greatly limited but for what ever reason I was on big fish all year starting with a personal best back in February of 12 lbs. 8 oz. I think it was a combination of limited time on the water and the fact Toledo Bend was 15' low for almost a year before returning to normal. My limited time on the water had me relaxed and concentrating harder while the low water concentrated the big bass.

But... if i were catching a 10lbr every 3 minutes I might have to break that rule.

If I catch a ten lb bass , it will probably be an hour before I make another cast .

18 in an hour is really an impressive physical feat. I'm sure i couldn't do that even if the school was there and biting. 

Heck, i don't even think i could be your net man at that rate.

That is quite impressive fishing. I could dig up some notes and logs from over the years river fishing for smallies and put some numbers up there in the 100's for the season. I counted dinks, runts and respectable bass. Logged time, temps., baits, water conditions, blah blah blah. Was fun to do but I just got away from it. I think I missed opportunities for bigger fish with my older fishing style. 

 

I fish a bit differently these days. I'd like to think I'm fishing for bigger smallmouth or largemouths these days. 

 

I don't have the best bass resources at my fingertips. I just make the best of what I have.

I fish the lower Housatonic River in Connecticut during the winter. Stripers always hold over in it.

I didn't realize there was a season.  We renew our licenses on Aug 1 is the closest definition to a season I guess.  We fish year round, there are days that you don't catch anything and others you catch 25+.  I would estimate normally I catch 1 or 2 a year that are 5+, 10 that are 3-5, and a whole lot that are 3 and under.

I caught 300 + fish in a month several times the one year I kept records.But it was multi-species. If I remember correctly, I caught over 3000 fish that year.

Im sure Ive caught 2-300 hundred bass per year the last 10 years or so.

I fish about 3-5 hours at a time, 30-50 days/year.  Compared to most around here, that's not very much.  I also don't fish many waters known for large fish, as those tend to more popular (both for anglers and recreational boaters)...but I prioritize solitude when I go out to fish.  On top of that, there is a variety of different kinds of waters near me -- natural lakes, impoundments, small streams, larger rivers, swampy river bayous and backwaters, gravel pits....they vary widely in numbers of bass, predominant species (LM vs.SM), average size, fertility, forage species, competitor predator species...so where I choose to fish, and how often, has a large effect on how many I catch.  Also, some years I have a lot of days to spare for fishing, others I don't.

 

So in the end, overall numbers of fish don't tell me much: if I caught more this year than last, is it because I'm improving as an angler? Or becauseI fished more? Or did I just fish more productive waters?

 

So I keep track of several metrics to gauge how I'm doing in each body of water I fish:

--number of bass caught per hour of fishing in each body of water

--average bass length in each body of water

--number of keeper sized bass (14" and up) caught per hour in each body of water. 

--weight of my largest bass in in each body of water

 

Generally, if I'm improving (rather than backsliding) on 2 or more of these metrics, on average across all the waters I fish compared to last year, I feel like I'm achieving something.

Huh?  Is there such a body of water that you can catch and land a 10+lb bass every 3 or so minutes 18 times in a row?    That's 200lbs of bass.

It's rare but it has happened a few times. Castaic in the early 90's was at it's peak big bass/giant bass population and occasionally a wolf pack of big bass would coral schools of planted rainbow trout up against structure and I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time with the right lure and tackle to take advantage.

Matt Neuman (Irod owner) had a similar catch at lake Casitas a decade later, Matt had several witnesses (via cell phone) I only have my boat partner, different lake that also peaked in the early 2000's.

Yes there are places like that, Sugar Lake in Mexico, right across the border from McAllen, TX, was such a place a few years ago, a 50 lb stringer in a tournament didn't take you anywhere.

That said, my best year was 2016, when I caught 1552 bass (averaged 26 per trip) on my home lake.  However, as of July 7th, I have caught 920 bass this year (36 per trip), so unless something weird happens over the next 6 months, 2018 may be the banner year.  Ironically, 2017 was one of my slowest years with 875 fish (19 per trip).

I'd say it is the lake more than me, although you do need to know some tricks in order to get a bait in front of them consistently.  When I first started fishing here, 10 fish was a real good day for me because I didn't know how many fish I was passing by.

Some years I track, some years I don't. This year I'm not, but based on some past records, an average year for me would be about 1,000 bass, another 1,000 crappie, and 500 misc. fish (2500 total). My recent best year was 2011 when I landed 2,305 bass along with another ~2500 non-bass for close to 5,000 fish total. That 2011 bass total was 82 trips totaling 260 hrs. The only stat I know for this year is having caught multiple open water bass so far in every month, including Jan and Feb, which often isn't a possibility being this far north.

In south Florida we have no off season.  Many fish almost every day, and catch thousands of fish every year.  During the dry season when water levels drop, and fish concentrate 100 bass in a half day is a real possibility, and often happens.  Its why I moved here 45 years ago.

After about 10 fish, I start losing interest in numbers and more on quality. I'd rather catch four 4lbers than 8 2lbers. 

 

That being said, 1000 fish a season would be 18 fish a week, or about 2-3 per day. Maybe when I was a kid and I could pond hop weekdays after school. Nowadays, gotta work!

 When I lived, fished and guided in so. Fl I rarely told how many bass we would catch in big cypress or the everglades because it would seem unbelievable in other parts of the country. One dry year in Big Cypress throwing a 3/4 oz. gold rattling rapala over 100lbs in 20 consecutive casts. That was the best day I remember - if the water was high  things got tough real quick.

Yes many would have a problem believing that, but us that fish the glades often know its a fact.  Concentrated bass can make fishing crazy at times, with big numbers, and big bass mixed in with the masses.  Thumbs torn up, and bass on almost every cast can last for hours, its not all year long but almost every March April and May.
