I'm not expierenced at punching , some-one else can weigh in . I have caught a lot of big bass by working weightless worms on top . Just plop it in place and one might blow up through the vegetation . Look for areas where the weeds are sparser and work it up to there and pause it at openings .

Coincidentally, I just got back from fishing a new pond for 45 minutes or so. Got 2 bites a spinnerbait (likely the same fish) but missed both of them. I tied on a squarebill later and hooked a pretty good one, but he just swam to the bank and popped the hook out before I could lip him. ? It's got decent water clarity, a lot of docks, and some rip-rap. I also saw a decent bass swimming along the shoreline.

I might try that. I could post a picture of it if that would help.

My first finesse rod is coming in the mail tomorrow. It's a dobyns fury 702. I'll definitely try the dropshot.

That will hopefully bring you some success.

 

I just used my first dropshot setup a couple weeks ago.  Fishing a shallow navigation canal(about 8' or less on average).  I did pretty well, it was a hot day but the fish would still hit that dropshot if I left it in front of their face long enough.  Seemed like multiple casts to the same spot, then letting it sit was the key.  Its so much fun catching bass on the lighter setups.
