SneakyPete Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 So just wanted to pass onto the group some great info and experiences I recently had. Months ago, I ordered a Shimano Scorpion DC reel from Japan. I was fishing with it and caught a lot of fish, then one day I had issues with the drag and it wasn't working and I had to hand line in a bass I had just hooked. So when I got home I took it apart, but should have waited till the next day. Being tired from fishing all day doesn't help. Lets just say I broke and scratched up parts of the reel. After a search on GOOGLE for SHIMANO JDM Servicing in the USA, I called and spoke with https://www.facebook.com/HisTackleBoxShop/ Hi's Tackle in San Francisco. After explaining what the problem was and the parts I wanted to order, they were un able to order those parts, but suggested emailing Japan Tackle. I was satisfied with the results and was in the process of emailing Japan Tackle, when Hi's called back on my cellphone and explained that my reel was not broken, but my line was tied to loosely so, it was causing it to spin. Wow, that made sense, and the fact that they called me back to help me was very impressive. I will definitely stop by when I visit family out there. So Kayo from Japan Tackled emailed me the next business day and sent me the schematic and I was able to place the order for the parts I needed. Great customer service by both parties I dealt with. My parts will be here in about two weeks. Thank you Kayo and Hi's Tackle, great customer service!!! 2 Quote
Bass Turd Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 Thanks for posting. Will you please go over the part about "the line being tied too loosely"? What does that mean? Although I am not planning on buying the Curado DC (yet) the information might help others on the forum. Quote

Hello Bass, What they mean by this is when a reel is spooled with straight braid (no mono or tape for backing). The entire spool braid can slip on the spool arbor. Braid is very slippery and without the monofilament backing or a couple of wraps of electrical tape around the arbor it will spin on the arbor. Hence the term "tied too loosely". I like to fill my reels (that have braid) about half way or maybe a little less with monofilament then tie a alberto knot and fill the rest of the way with braid. Hope that helps neighbor, Fishingmickey 2 Quote
Bass Turd Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 Ahhhhh. Got it. That's one of the top three answers on this site... "Did you put backing on before..." 1 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted July 5, 2018 Super User Posted July 5, 2018 Just so I get this straight, there simply wasn't enough backing? Don't keep my in suspense too long, lol. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 More likely no backing. All you really need is enough to cover the spool with a layer or two. But why spool on yards of expensive braid that will never see the light of day? 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 6, 2018 Super User Posted July 6, 2018 Hi's is a respected operation. Braid slipping on the arbor is a common pitfall. Glad you worked it out. Quote

Sorry should have clarified, the line when tied to the spool, I didn’t pull it tight enough at the spool end, which cause enough slack to caused the spool of line to spin on the metal spool of the reel. Hope that made sense On 7/5/2018 at 7:01 PM, islandbass said: Just so I get this straight, there simply wasn't enough backing? Don't keep my in suspense too long, lol. I didn’t use backing at all, I have another Shimano DC reel with braid with no issues. I tied a tighter knot on that reel, guess I didn’t double check the knot on this one. I will consider the backing suggestion in the future, thanks for all the good info Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted July 12, 2018 Super User Posted July 12, 2018 Huh, I thought Hi's went out of business, their website has been down for a while now. Quote
Basseditor Posted July 12, 2018 Posted July 12, 2018 I put a piece of tape around the arbor when I attach the line. No backing needed. 1 Quote

Unless they change spools to grab braid, I will always use a mono backing as opposed to using tape or tying through the holes. Tape - don’t want to mess with sticky situations let alone adding unnecessary weight to the spool Tying through holes - too time consuming with bad eyes and fingers, lol. As as for the backing, you’ll only need about 30’ of mono. I try to use a mono of a near equivalent diameter if possible but it isn’t necessary. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted July 12, 2018 Posted July 12, 2018 Hi's is one of the better, and few remaining, mom and pop tackle shops in the Bay Area. I believe they sponsor, or at the very least have close ties, with Chris Zaldain. 1 Quote
