Ned spinning rod

So I am looking for a spinning rod to use as a ned rig setup and I came across the Fenwick Silverhawk II Spinning Rods that are on sale but I am not sure if I want to buy it because close to 40% of the reviews are stating that it breaks easily, specifically the tip. I was wondering if anyone has or has had one and can certify the claim that they can break easily or not. Also are there any suggestions on any rods I should look at for fishing the Ned rig. I am looking for a medium light with a fast tip that is within 6'9" to 7'1" range. I am relatively new to the ned rig so let me know if I should be looking for something else in a spinning rod.

I have no experience with that rod but you're right on target for what you should be looking for in a rod for fishing one imo. I use a 6' 10" ML/XF rod meant for a drop shot for my Ned rig rod and it works excellent. I have a couple 6' 9" ML/F Vendetta spinning rods that I use for clients on guide trips for Ned rig rods and they work well for it also.

For a rod that performs well above it's price point, look at the Daiwa Aird-X ....$55

 

I am using the 7' M for ned rigs, mostly 1/15th and 1/10th oz heads. I pair it with a 2000 size reel, 10lb braid, and 6 or 8 lb FC leaders. This rod fished more like a ML power rod than a M. And I am finding it about perfect for the technique.

Lew's Wally Marshall pro series.  7' ML and around $40-50.  This is the second year using mine and I absolutely love it.  I get a lot of compliments when other people use it as well.  Seems everyone loves the feel of the rod.

I have the 7' ML/F Silverhawk II and I use it for Ned's. I've had no problem with the tip, and I've caught lots of fish on it. It's typically on sale for $69.99 though.

 

For $100, I'd get the Cabela's XML spinning rod. It has higher quality components and lifetime warranty.

The Ned isn't really length-specific. I know the originator uses

6' rods for the task. I use 5'9" and 6' rods as well, fast action,

but I believe moderate is also acceptable.

I use either a 7ft or 7’3 med fast for my neds. Braid or braid to leader with a 2500 Daiwa in either Fuego or Tatula LT. The 7ft Tatula spinning rod is around $100 and is very sensitive for the price. Give it a look.

Actually almost everything qualifies for the sale so you can get another rod if desired. As I have not received it yet I cannot comment on it but maybe someone else here can.

I have 2 of those Fenwicks-excellent rod for the money. One of them is my Ned rod, and  I really like it.

 

As for how rugged they are, I don't really know. I take good care of my rods, haven't broken one since 1988 or so.

As Darren mentioned, Ned prefers 6' (he makes short casts) medium action rods costing $20 (Shakespeare Synergy). Sensitivity is a non-issue to him as he emphasizes a "no feel" retrieve. In this regard, any med or med-lt rod, depending on actual power/action, in that general length will work fine. Take your pick. Beyond that, many prefer longer, faster action rods of lighter weight and greater sensitivity. If that's where you want to head, go right ahead and enjoy, but it's not necessary and arguably can be a bit counter-productive. I've used both ends and everything in between and caught plenty of fish in all cases.

I use the St Croix Mojo 6'10" med/lt ex fast,  love it and it doubles as a gd drop shot rod.  Listed at $130, but if your a vet or know someone who is you can get at least 10% off.

I have some silverhawk II casting rods. One is currently junk after a month because the blank is spinning in the handle. I got it at Cabelas and don't have the receipt or tags. I don't think they'll take it back. 

Just be careful about that. Other than that, they're great

I believe any Med Lt/Med rod between 6' and 7' foot will work. Doesn't have to be expensive to work. I hardly ever feel a bite, just see the line move.

I use my drop shot rod, a 7'3" ML/F favorite usa balance. Runs around 100 shipped if it's not on sale. It's my second one, I gotta say I absolutely love them. I just got a daiwa fuego spinning rod in medium for senkos and big ned rigs but the jury is still out on it.

Do you think a 7’ Daiwa Tatula bass rod (previous gen with black Eva grips) (Med/fast 1/8-3/4oz 6-14lb line) is too heavy a power for 1/16 Ned rigs? I’m using a cheap Light power ugly stick but feel that’s a little underpowered. Thanks for the help @Team9nine

Truly believe any ‘Name’ brand ML between 6’-7’ @$100 will serve your purpose (+ other finesse applications). Keep your eyes open for upgrades; I was able to secure a 6’8” ML Zodias from the BR Flea Market for a very good price and made that my designated NR rig.

If you are also using smaller, thinner wire hooks with your 1/16 oz heads, I’d call that overpowered. If you are using some of the newer heads with heavier, larger hook sizes, you’d probably be fine. I like ML for most of my Ned stuff, but actions and power ratings vary quite a bit between manufacturers.

Thanks for the advice:) Any recommendations on a good ML rod in the 6’-6’8” length. I tend to like shorter rods? @Team9nine in the $100-150 range?

I fish the Ned on a BPS Carbonlite 2.0 ML Fast 6'9" paired with Stradic 1000 spooled with Fireline Ultra 8 and fluorocarbon leader.

I'll be doing my finesse work on a Fury 702SF...occasional Ned work on a Spinmatic UL/F - but that's a 'budget' rod.

Right now the current favorite in my lineup is a ML Shimano Clarus. Believe it runs around $90 if still available. It’s labeled as ‘fast,’ but definitely feels a bit more moderate which is my personal preference with small light-wire hooks. The old St. Croix Premiers had similar actions, just bump down a notch because of power (L instead of ML).
