What to do in this heatwave...

So until at least next Friday according to the forecast, we have a pretty rough heatwave. Today, I packed up the car and drove 2.5 hours to Cabela's, got a couple lures and some camping gear (going in two weeks), so that kept us in the AC all day. My car was showing a temperature of 97 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter.

 

Normally, I'd just fish mornings and/or evenings, but currently I am coming off my biweekly chemo treatment and I can't even drink cold water (maybe I will be able to tomorrow, but I'm not banking on it), so it's very hard to keep hydrated which puts me at risk of heat stroke.

can you wet down in the places you are fishing? 

otherwise, I would suggest you stay inside with the AC on.

I say this considering you are getting chemo treatment.

I haven't lugged my AC down from the attic, and at this point I am not going up there to get it anytime soon, it's an unvented attic that is probably over 100 by now. Because of all the shade on my hill, my house is usually cooler than everywhere else.

 

Every single thing that could go wrong this treatment has. If the heatwave could have held off until next week when I'm basically 100% functional again, it wouldn't be so bad. To add to it, my fridge just died and all the food in it just went bad.

This is the first weekend I haven't fished since ice out. Heat index of 105+ both days. The humidity is unbearable. I went outside yesterday morning to wash and wax the new truck at 5:30 and it was 80* with 90% humidity. I didn't do it. It was 95* by 9:30am. Ended up driving to WeatherTech and bought a bed and tailgate liner. Got home and installed them. Crazy how fast black rubber gets hot. My knees and hands were cursing at me. Went out at 5:30 this morning it was 80* again but 70% Rh. Truck was washed and waxed by 8:30am. Took a shower and sat on the couch the rest of the day. I can deal with heat, but 95* ambient and 90% humidity is miserable.

Ouch! Yesterday and today hit 97 and that's bad enough. I missed last weekend too because of the rain. I thought about trying Saturday, but it was supposed to be violent thunderstorms. The plan was to go rent a canoe at a Vermont State Park, a little bit of a drive until they said likely afternoon thunderstorms, but we didn't get anything until after I went to bed and early in the morning.

 

Turns out I had a friend's adoption party to go to today and then went swimming, so that kept me busy today. At least I didn't stay home and do nothing, I'd go insane.

Ya know what......Sometimes it's just too d**n hot to fish.  When I was guiding, I had no choice but now I do and it's just not worth raking myself over the coals to get out and fish when it's this oppressive.  I took Saturday and washed and waxed the boat in the early morning and a little later because my boat sits in the shade.  Did some honey-do's around the outside of the house but once that flaming ball got overhead, I went indoors and called it good.  There's no shame in my game!!

It's been very hot in my area too. I still fish, but very early mornings. 2hrs is about it. Be careful in this extreme heat

I'm a fat man in a 21 foot glass boat with no easy way back in if I decide to exit.  Besides, I fish the Potomac and that's the last body of water you'd EVER catch me in!!

It is always miserable herd (MS) 4 or 5 months a year.  I would like to say that you get used to it, but you don't. Be smart in the heat, and keep your pets cool!

Like you guys I'm in right in the middle of this heat wave with you.

 

Rains have the river conditions not to my liking or I'd be chasing some Smallies around. Been putting my efforts in up on the lake. Not doing to bad for water conditions on there. Catching bass on drop offs with Gizzard Shad patterns. 

 

I'm too stupid to stay home and suck up the AC. But I'm out from 5:00am to 8:30 ish. If I can get alittle topwater, worm and Crankbait fishing in I'm ok with it. I'll be at the ramp at 4:30 tomorrow morning.

I went fishing last night .   Fished til 1 in the morning and caught about thirty on buzzbait and Storm Rattling Thin Fin . It was   comfortable .

Well....still fishing the Tues/Thursday 5-9ers.......very warm....sweat just pours off ya.  Even golf twice a week.  Can hardly wear sunglasses even.  Do I still enjoy.....yes....catching some fish....yes.  Do I pour in the fluids....you bet.  Not a good sit at the TV kinda of person.  Like moving around....down the road I know I'll have to...not anxious to get there.

The heat some of you are experiencing now is what it's like every summer in my neck of the woods. Because of the extreme humidity in the mornings I usually fish in the early evening. It's still hot, but after the higher heat during the day and the slight drop in humidity it feels bearable outside.

 

I used to bike to my bank fishing locations but now I drive so I can keep a fully stocked cooler full of water nearby. Sometimes I'll brave the heat during the day, but as I get older that's less and less frequent.

 

I have been looking at Google Earth this summer and have mapped out some new lagoons that offer some shady areas to set up and fish. I'm the type that usually covers a lot of ground when I fish, but in this case I may try to bring a chair and see if I can stay in one place in the shade and fish.

I woke up at 6am looked at the temp, 82 degrees.  I just went back to sleep.  It's supposed to be 95 today with a heat index of 110.  I think I will be hunting down some unneeded tackle in an air conditioned store or reading a book.

I despise the extreme heat as much as I do winter. I've thought about moving south, figuring I'd get a longer fishing season but then I have to consider what I would lose from sitting in the AC in the summer too.

And sometimes it's too d**n hot to catch fish. LOL. I went this morning and caught a dink bass and two crappies (I was bass fishing) after paddling all over a 35 acre reservoir. I had to resort to casting a Cordell Spot toward the deepest areas, letting it sink to the bottom and reeling as slowly as possible to catch those. But I've been on lockdown because my wife's 90 yr old dad has been with us for 3 1/2 weeks and he's a full-time job. 1 1/2 more weeks to go.

One of my greater skills (that of course requires minimal brain power) is being able to work and fish out in the extreme heat. It only comes in useful a couple weeks out of the year but it’s necessary! I would rather put up with sweating through my clothes for a few months than having to drill holes in the water for a few months

If you're not able to hydrate, don't risk.

 

I have seen many people go down because of heat injury and It's never pretty.  Don't risk it man.  Sharpen your hooks, rearrange tackle, clean reels, but don't put yourself in a heat wave if you can't hydrate.

I haven't been fishing for almost 3 weeks. I don't handle extreme heat well anymore. Between the heat and loads of rain and high muddy water I gave up. May get to go next week as it is supposed to be cooler and little chance of rain.

I fish at night during the summer months. in Florida that's from jan, to dec......LOL.  seriously when it gets real hot nighttime is the best. lots of bug spray........
