Trouble starting 90hp johnson 2 stroke

Bought my first boat last year. So I know pretty much nothing about them. The last two times I've been out its taken forever for the motor to start the first time. Once it starts it runs fine and I can start it no problem every time after that first start. Not sure what going on. I never had this trouble before and I don't think I'm doing anything differently than I have before but I don't know. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

What year, make and model and horsepower are the boat and motor?

The boat is old an 86 winner. The motor is a 2006 johnson 90hp brp 2 stroke. That's all I know about the motor.

Step No. 1 - Make sure the gas/primer bulb is squeezed full and solid the first time you start a trip, regardless of time of year.

 

Then advance the throttle (prop unengaged), push in the key to choke and turn at same time. As soon as she starts, let off the choke and adjust throttle as necessary to just a slightly fast idle. Always let these engines idle and warm up to operating temp before hauling butt, even in summer, to avoid a blown engine down the road.

 

Worked like a charm for my 2002 115 Johnson 2 stroke while I had it.

Had this same problem in our boat (‘93 Envinrude 60hp) and for us it turned it the choke was not engaging.  Flipped the choked up manually on the outboard and it started on the first crank.  This could be worth checking.

Be sure to run Champion plugs, really helped mine.

First, make sure the primer solenoid is functioning properly. 

The motor does not have a choke, it uses an electric primer solenoid to enrich the fuel to the engine for starting.

I don't know if Johnson's are the same but to start my "83 Murcury I can choke the motor by pushing the key up or towards the ignition unit. I hear a "chunk" as the solenoid engages the choke then I turn the key to start. 

 

I can advance the throttle without putting it into gear by pushing a button at the base of the handle axis. I can then give it more or less gas by moving the handle forward or backward independent of the gears as I'm trying to start. Once warmed up I can move the handle back to idle speed and it will reset the button and put it into gear.

 

Again... I don't know if it is the same on Johnson but maybe someone else can confirm this.
