Drew03cmc Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 I must have missed the boat. What's the main difference? Where and when are they commonly used and gear recommendations? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 27, 2018 Global Moderator Posted June 27, 2018 The Toadrunner has a more rounded and upturned nose that doesn't want to dig into grass like the Teckel does and also has a tail that is adjustable so you can get different sounds. There're good around scattered grass, kind of similar to where you'd fish a toad, too open for a regular frog but too thick for a treble hooked topwater. I just use my regular frog rod for them. BrackishBassin Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Sort of off topic, but yesterday found a local tackle shop that I didn’t know existed. They had toadrunners in stock. I may or may not have picked up a few... Quote
SBFISHING Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 I own and have thrown both. and out of the package id say I like the teckel frog more, iv had problems with the toadrunner's hooks slipping out from behind/between the legs and causing it to run awkwardly. I will also say I do like the tail of the toadrunner better since I can customize the sound I want out of it and have since swapped out the tails of my teckel frogs to the tails of the toadrunner. I find my hook up ratio better with the teckel as well. Quote
Super User tcbass Posted June 27, 2018 Super User Posted June 27, 2018 After using both the Teckel and Toadrunner I would use neither. Both get a lot of blow ups but I have only hooked one fish with one even with waiting to set the hook. You can make a homemade one for cheaper than a Teckel and you don’t have to wait set the hook. Just set it. Caught a ton on these. Use a #5 or #6 three way swivel, medium Owner CPS Centering Spring, Teckel Sprinker Frog tail, and Booyah Pad Crasher. 2 Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 I have the Toadrunner and eventhough I've just started using it i like it better than the Teckel I had. They just seem to be made better and they run more true IMO. The Teckel would sometimes take a few seconds for the tail to start churning but the Toadrunner starts churning right at the start of retrieve. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 27, 2018 Global Moderator Posted June 27, 2018 I just buy a pack of rage toads and some BIG hooks Quote

Drew03cmc Posted June 27, 2018 Author Posted June 27, 2018 I'm curious how is it cheaper to make one, $6 for a Pad Crasher, $8 for the Teckel tails, $2 for the swivels...to make several perhaps... Quote

On topic, I have tried both and don’t really like either. I think the Toadrunner is better overall but I hate the tail and how fragile it is, I have had the wire pull out of two of them so far. I am going to give the homemade ones a go at some point, I have maybe a half dozen frogs sitting around that I never fish and a few Big EZ swimbaits with ripped-up heads to steal the tails off of. I think the idea of “a frog with a spinning tail” is a sound one, but no one has prefected it yet. Quote

Doesn’t have a huge selection of lures, but they carry stuff my local shop doesn’t. Quote

I've broken it down in the below thread. Homemade Teckel Sprinker Frog: $9.80. ($6.69 if using Booyah Pad Crasher + $1.99 for Teckel Sprinker Frog Tail + 49 cents for the VMC 3 way Swivel #4 + 33 cents for CPS Centering Pin Spring). https://bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/205493-initial-thoughts-review-of-teckel-sprinker-frog-vs-booyah-toad-runner-vs-homemade-teckel-sprinker-frog/?tab=comments#comment-2320498 Also, I started using smaller #5 and #6 three way swivels because I lost 2 tails taking fish off. Haven't lost one since then. Quote

Drew03cmc Posted June 28, 2018 Author Posted June 28, 2018 Im pretty sure I asked how is it cheaper to make one...$8 for a pack of tails, $2 for swivels, 3 for CPS springs, that's $13 and I haven't bought a single Pad Crasher yet. It's not cheaper, but like was said, if it's more effective...so be it. Quote

But you're not using the entire pack of CPS Springs, Teckel Tails, or 3 way swivels for each frog, so I divided the parts individually. So, 1 Teckel tail, 1 CPS Spring, 1 frog, 1 three way swivel......... Frog: $6.69 Tail: $1.99 Swivel: .49 cents CPS: .33 cents Total: $9.50 If my math is correct. Quote

Not too difficult. You said making ONE is cheaper, but that's false. If you don't have any of the materials, you're spending nearly $20 for the first one due to the cost of the tails, swivels and CPS. After the first one, it's an additional $6 for the frog. The materials are bought at once. Hope this clears it up. Quote

If you had to make more homemade ones you’d buy a new Booyah and then the rest of the materials you’d already have in stock. 1 Quote
