Joseph B. Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 I bought a used deep V aluminum boat that has two Lowrance fish finders. One is at the console, no problem. But the other one is mounted in/on the rear seat pedistal hole. I'm thinking the previous owner wanted it there for back trolling. Well I want to relocate it to the bow so I can see it while operating my trolling motor. If any of you have relocated one before I'd appreciate your input. I'd like to do it myself if plausible rather than incur costs for dealer install. Thanks for your time and help. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted June 26, 2018 Super User Posted June 26, 2018 That is not difficult. You will need to see how your boat has its wiring run up to the front deck. You will need to carefully remove the power lead coming from the battery. It will need t be replaced with a new wire( probably slightly larger gauge depending on what they used. I usually wire tie them along the bundle of wires in order to make the install a little more professional and less likely to give you issues later. For best results I prefer the power to be run all the way from the battery to the front deck and I always install a thermal breaker in the line near the battery. Minn Kota sells a good one. The transducer will also have to run all that way. In the past I have made a hole in either the front panel or near it and used a plastic wire cover to make the wires come out neatly. Lastly I often use a Ram mount so my graph can be moved around. Ram makes a good one but so do many others. If you want to you could also look at the Johnny Ray mounts. They are a removable but fixed location mount that does swivel. I have used mounts from both companies. Here are some pictures of the items I mentioned. and lastly if you go to the website for T&H Marine they have a "decorative wire cover " that looks like this. I hope this helps. kenmitch Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Like fishnkamp said it's not really that hard to do it. It would be best to pick up a trolling motor transducer for your Lowrance while your at it. Otherwise you'll be a boat length off on your sonar as what you think is below you will really be behind you. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted June 27, 2018 Super User Posted June 27, 2018 Oops I forgot that little detail. Good catch kenmitch. Quote

I didn't really give it much thought when I first started back into fishing last year. I kayak fish and just mounted my stuff to it. Kayak is short so it's not like it was off much anyways. When I upgraded my sonar to the Elite Ti 5 and started getting into making my own custom map of my local lake is when I learned about the optimal positioning of the transducer and the sonar unit. With my mounts the sonar is directly above the transducer so the gps is in syn with the transducer which is more accurate as far as the mapping goes. I guess being on a kayak it was more of a in the details move on my part as it's not like I would have been that far off anyways. Quote
Joseph B. Posted July 1, 2018 Author Posted July 1, 2018 Hey guys thanks much for your help! It makes sense the way Fishnkamp described it so I now feel prepared to relocate it myself. Also appreciate the pictures of the parts. I already have a swivel mount like the second one pictured so just need to get a thermal breaker and wire cover. My deep cycle battery is under the console so will be close for power source. I'll give you a shout if questions. Thanks again and good fishing to you. Quote
