Dean Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I found a boat i like out in Oklahoma, not sure what town its in yet, but i live in Mass. The boats old, beat up and needs to be restored. It has no trailer. It could be a really nice boat, which is why i want it. Are there any companies out there that would be able to ship it to my house, even though it doesnt have a trailer? The boat is a 16ft tidecraft, if that helps. Quote
TopDog Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 It will probably cost you more than the boat to get it shipped to Mass. I would just continue to search till you found it around here. Quote
TopDog Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Type in boat transporter in google and you will get some links. Look at this article: http://www.1staboard.com/boattips.htm Even though it was a 30 footer, look at the price from Mass to Maine. I bet yours would be more than that. Especially with gas prices these days. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 11, 2008 Super User Posted January 11, 2008 Please be very, very careful. Friend bought a beautiful yacht for $23,000. Bought a truck to take it back to Louisiana but due to DOT regulations he could not take the boat on the highway via trailering. So he paid a guy $5,500 to tow the boat to Louisiana. When he unloaded the boat and had it checked over at the marina, it was found that the motor was damaged beyond repair and the boat needs a new $30,000 engine. So, it just sits there, in Louisiana, after a $40,000 investment (including the pickup he purchased). I would suggest having the boat checked out by a qualified boat mechanic to make sure it is seaworthy and does not need expensive repairs. Then, you will have to hire a professional driver with a tractor and trailer to bring the boat to you, following all DOT rules and regulations. You may want to purchase insurance on the boat in case it is damaged in transit. Overall, your initial investment before you ever see the boat can be high so I suggest passing on the boat, unless you know it is seaworthy and needs no repairs. Don't be in a hurry. There are boats all over the place. Quote
tntitans21399 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I would say if the boat needs work don't even look at it. For the price to have it shipped it would be better to keep looking you can can find one that would be cheaper and need a lot less work or no work needs to be done. I would just keep looking locally or within driving range for a boat. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 11, 2008 Super User Posted January 11, 2008 What would you be willing to pay to get it to you? Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 11, 2008 Super User Posted January 11, 2008 You will need to buy a trailer anyway; then call a Hot Shot Service they will delivery it any where in the USA; it will also cost you to have it loaded on the trailer. Quote
NBR Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Think about this. Locals have looked at this boat in Oklahoma and have passed. If you buy this boat it will be one of or the biggest holes in the water to throw in money. Quote
farmpond1 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Is there something unique or special about this boat that makes it worth the extra expense of shipping? If it's an extra great deal, why? (Remember the old adage, "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.") You might be paying a bunch of money to ship someone elses junk. That may sound pessimistic but be very cautious. Quote
Super User Tin Posted January 11, 2008 Super User Posted January 11, 2008 In my opinion, bad idea, very bad idea. Don't do it, not only will it probably be a headache, but also very EXPENSIVE. Between shipping it, fixing it up, and all the time and energy, just keep checking the paper, craigslist.com, and other sources. Do yourself a favor and stay local. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Expensive and unnecessary. You live in a state that is absolutely LOADED with used boats. Super User Long Mike Posted January 13, 2008 Super User Posted January 13, 2008 What we have here is a typical case of adolescent rectal/cranial inversion. Quote
