Modified Albright and Alberto are the same knot... http://www.101knots.com/alberto-knot-modified-albright-knot.html Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted June 29, 2018 Super User Posted June 29, 2018 Just now, Boomstick said: I thought the Alberto and Albright were the same. My bad. No problem - Albright is a single set of wraps beginning from the back and moving toward the loop/eye, modified/Alberto is double wraps both up and back, usually fewer in number than the single pass on the Albright. This refreshed my memory. Knot wars has the alberto and fg ahead of the double uni, but it wasn't knot wars I was thinking of but some other knot comparison test I read maybe a year ago that had the double uni beating out the Alberto pretty strongly, but still losing to the FG knot. I want to say that wasn't even a youtube series, but a similar article to this one I just can't recall where. Anyway, I still use a 10 turn double uni because it literally never breaks for me, although I kind of think the one I did last night may be a first as I did it near blind (chemotherapy effects my light perception, and I couldn't see the flurocarbon leader line at all and could barely see the braid). Should be fine, but it's my first time doing it blind. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 29, 2018 Super User Posted June 29, 2018 When the top braid to leader knots test under 75% knot strength should caution using braid with leaders. The new knot war winner in the video using a mod Albright jumped up to 80% knot strength. 100% knot strength should be the goal. 75-80% knot strength is good for FC line, 100% is normal for mono line, both using a simple well tied Palomar knot. Tim Kelly Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Knot tests on a rig are of interest, but don't necessarily tell you much about real world situations, especially when the knot is going through the guides. I found the alberto and double uni worked satisfactorily if you were using a short leader that didn't go through the guides, but as soon as you're casting it through the guides it weakened quickly and failed unpredictably. if you were snagged and pulling for a break it would always go at the leader knot. The FG has totally corrected the issues the other knots showed up and I can use very long leaders, the knot never breaks and I can keep re-tying all day without running out of leader. I'm sold. Quote
jay bird1138 Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 I use the double uni and have never (hate to say this) had a break off. Just got done florida fishing and landed a 3 foot shark with that knot with very heavy drag. Also hooked a tarpon and other big fish with no problem. I try not to get it through the guides not only because of the knot strength but I just don’t like that feeling. Quote
