GateToWire Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 I have a whole series of Dobyn's Fury casting rods for every application. Jigs, Plastics, Flipping, frogs, Chatterbaits. If you were going to upgrade just 1 rod to a $200+ higher level rod with a better blank and more sensitivity....what would you upgrade? Jig rod? Flipping Stick? Other? and what Make/model would you upgrade to? Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 24, 2018 Super User Posted June 24, 2018 your most used rod 3 Quote
kschultz76 Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 All of them....1 at a time. Seriously first choice would be plastics/jig rod or finesse plastics rod where sensitivity matters most. Id be looking at Kistler Helium3, St Croix LTB, G Loomis GLX or IMX Pro, Megabass Orochi XX, maybe an ALX. But it if you get one on sale I think the Kistler Helium 3 is the best bang for your buck. Stephen B Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 I would definitely look at the Expride or Orochi XX series to meet yours needs as a jig/texas rig rod. Quote
rangerjockey Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 The bottom contact rod..If you like Dobyns, the Champion XP 744 is a dandy jig rod, plenty sensitive and around your budget. The Extreme HP is a little more sensitive but I'm not sure it's $100 more sensitive. Quote

I know bottom contact is where to spend the most, but I seldom ever fish a jig. I know I should, but just can't seem to get started on them even though I've bought a few. So for me upgrading a jig rod wouldn't be the best use of my money. I'd prefer to spend the money on a versatile rod....which would probably fish jigs good anyway. Quote

Something like a GLX MBR 843 or 844, Helium 3 MH 4 power, or Orochi XX Diablo Spec R are all really versatile sticks that can be used with plastics and jigs but also throw spinnerbaits, swimjigs, chatterbaits, topwater, small swimbaits, lipless, even some squarebills. LCG Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 Any rod that you use techniques that require bottom contact or feeling light bites. A typical jig and worm rod would be my most sensitive personally. I don't have any of the rods mentioned. I primarily use a St Croix Avid X 6'6 Mh-f casting and Mojo 6'8 m-xf spinning rod. I have no problems with sensitivity. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted June 24, 2018 Super User Posted June 24, 2018 If you can go up to around $400 then I would say get a GLX MBR in whatever length and power would suit you the best. You will have a great rod that will do most everything in its weight range well. I have a mbr783 and love it other then finding the handle overly long. They also offer the MBR rods in the EX6 series in the $200 range, but I have never gotten to fish one of the new models yet. Quote
