HeyCoach Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 It could be a bowling alley. ? I entered a contest on the Twitters and ended up winning a $100 gift card to Bass Pro Shop. I’m needing a good baitcasting crankbait setup. What would you do with a $100 gift card, I’m needing some ideas. 4 Quote
Lead Head Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 Lately I've been using gift cards from big brand stores (bps, academy) to buy line, terminal tackle, and lures. I can usually find rods and reels so much cheaper from other sources that I feel like I'm wasting money to pay msrp at a big brand store. Don't let me talk you out of getting something you want, it's just my approach on gift cards. Quote
HeyCoach Posted June 23, 2018 Author Posted June 23, 2018 @Lead Head where do you find your rods and reels at? @BaitFinesse I am not wanting to be spending much more than the gift card. Maybe somewhere around the $120-$150 range? Quote
LionHeart Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 Will be tough to get a decent rod and reel for $100. If it were me, I'd wait for a sale and get one or the other. Or do like Lead Head suggested, spend it on lures, line, etc. This is typically what I do. "Mind power?" Quote
edfitzvb Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 When I receive a gift card for BPS or a similar store I use it to buy things I need but am reluctant to buy myself.... Tackle storage boxes, storage chests, weights, hooks, waders..... stuff that I need but don't necessarily want to spend MY money on. 2 Quote
Lead Head Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 My most recent reel purchases have been fuego ct from American Legacy Fishing through eBay. Of course 2 days after I buy one for $67.99 they put one up "buy it now" for $62.99 and it was eligible for 15% off. If I had waited 2 days I could have had one for $54.00... such is my luck. It looks like they still have one up for $62.99. Both bps and academy list them for $99.99 and I doubt they will ever run a sale that will get them down to $63. Sportsman Outfitters offers really good prices on Lews reels through eBay as well. I have stumbled across similar deals on rods, I can't remember who but I'm pretty sure I saw one of the "eBay retailers" that was accepting the 15% off code selling Dobyns Fury rods for $109 and free shipping. It's harder to find rods at super discounts because of shipping. So basically, I just shop around on the internet until I run across a deal that I know the big brands can't beat. For what it's worth, I would suggest grabbing the fuego ct I mentioned earlier for $63 (check the gear ratio, they might only be selling 8.1.1 at this price and that's not conducive to cranking) and using the gift card on a rod. Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 23, 2018 Super User Posted June 23, 2018 No idea what BPS carries. A couple rods to look for...Sellus Crankbait, Falcon HD, Lightning Shock, Vendetta (if on sale) and house brands...which I obviously know nothing about. Reels? Again no idea what BPS carries, but some possibilities to look for. Black Max, Silver Max, Daiwa RG, Lew's Laser MG, Trion, President, President XT, Caenan or a Fuego CT on sale. I own rods from these companies, but not those models. Same for the reels. My first choice by far for a reel would be the Fuego CT. Then the President XT or Caenan. I like my Falcon rods a lot so that would be my first choice of those listed. I agree with bigfruits.....I'd try to add a little extra cash. Quote
Deeare Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 Try trading it for a decent used set up or wait until next spring for the rod/reel trade in. Only time it's worth buying a rod/reel from bps is during the trade in / spring event. Good luck if you do try try to trade it be specific with what you want for a rod: length/ strength/ action and reel: gear ratio and retrieve. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 23, 2018 Super User Posted June 23, 2018 BPS Quantum KVD crankbait combo is within your budget. Tom Quote
Hulkster Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 d**n. and I thought it was gonna be a leg lamp. Quote
Robert Riley Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 That Quantum or the RevoX combos are the way to go. You could always just wait around until the Spring Sale and get a PQ and a rod for a little more. Quote
HeyCoach Posted June 23, 2018 Author Posted June 23, 2018 I thought that you’d want a 5.x:1 gear ratio reel instead of a 6.6:1 ratio? Quote
Robert Riley Posted June 23, 2018 Posted June 23, 2018 Meh, I lot of pros are using a 7:1 now I hear. It's really just a matter of torque. If you wear out cranking, or you have arthritis in your hands/wrist (that's what some of my customers complain about) then you may want that 5:1 ratio. Quote
