Garrett Jornov Posted June 22, 2018 Posted June 22, 2018 So I’m looking into getting into the bigger swimbait game and need to find a rod, I was wondering if I could get away with using a Daiwa Fuego 8 ft heavy to throw 6.8-7.8 keitechs and 8” huds, or should I just go with the Daiwa DX swimbait rod in 8ft heavy, I’m on a budget, just trying to get the most bang for my buck. You could throw the Keitechs easily with the heavy. The Hudd will feel like a bit much on it imo. I finally settled on the Dobyns fury 8ft SB rod as my all purpose. Really great for the money. Quote

Super User WRB Posted June 22, 2018 Super User Posted June 22, 2018 8" Hudds dry weigh is 4 1/8 to 4 1/2 depending on the ROF. Hudds fish heavier when wet and you need a swimbait rod with a top weight rating between 8 to 10 oz. What reel and line to you plan to use? Tom Quote

The power is higher and the action faster from most people's analysis. I have an 806 champion but use it for trebLe baits like glides and wakes. If you like the 6 then you will want the 8 so just get the 807 to start with. Quote

Fury is not made in an 807 unfortunately and it sounds like the champion series is way outside what OP is looking to pay for a rod. Quote

My rod has a 3/8 to 6 oz weight rating. this setup just launches into space. if you're looking for something cheaper there is no better swimbait rod than Irod's genesis 2 bailey swim heavy or the swimbait X-heavy. The bailey in swim heavy is named after Matt Bailey. you may have seen him and the owner of Irod Matt newman on stoked on fishing catching that world record spotted bass. at $149 nothing beats it. If you have the money call tackletrap in alabama and telll him what you're looking for and trust him to make you a killer setup. For the reel , the daiwa ryoga shrapnel is amazing. ive caught 40lb seabass on that reel . i can launch 3 oz baits 80-100 yards. it has no anti backlash. it costs $400 and is the best reel ive ever owned. you can find one for $549 on ebay. Super User WRB Posted June 25, 2018 Super User Posted June 25, 2018 Shimano Cardiff 300 series round reel is ideal in the $110 price range. I prefer Irod 8' XH swimbait rod for 8" Hudds and it balances with the Cardiff 300A reel nicely. Sunline Defier Armilo 25 lb, 165 yd spool fills the Cardiff 300A and is an excellent casting line for swimbaits. Tom 1 Quote
