finatic Posted June 20, 2018 Posted June 20, 2018 I recently got into fishing with baitcasters. I have two of them now - a Pflueger President XT and a Diawa Tatula CT. Coming from a lifetime of fishing with spinning reels I'm a bit disappointed in the baitcaster's silent drags. Catching fish with the baitcasters it's completely silent and for me personally this takes some of the fun and excitement out of the experience. I loved hearing that screaming bail whenever a big fish bites. Now it's just a whole silent movie. I mean, what a drag! Is anyone else put off by this silent drag trend? Is this just something that's related to baitcasters? 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 20, 2018 Global Moderator Posted June 20, 2018 I don't even use the drag on my baitcasters except in an emergency, not that most bass will pull drag on them anyways. I don't care if they make noise or not, I just want them to work when I need them too. 1 Quote
finatic Posted June 20, 2018 Author Posted June 20, 2018 Oh I agree, is just that I miss that sound when I catch a fish. Nothing like hearing the bail sing when a big fish hits and is running some line. Quote
Steve1357 Posted June 20, 2018 Posted June 20, 2018 Thats why I love my 1981 and earlier Abu round reels. Had the clicker built into the main gear. Gets people's attention lol 1 Quote
finatic Posted June 20, 2018 Author Posted June 20, 2018 I think the newer baitcasters are mostly silent drags now. I definitely love the Tatula, but I miss that sound when a fish hits. Been catching a lot of smallmouths out where I fish and those are exciting. Such fighters, even the little ones! Yesterday I caught a nice one and as I was about to pull him up onto the bank he jumped and the lure came off and shot up into this tree. Not having that bail sound kind of takes something away from the experience for me. Guess I'll just have to get used to it. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted June 20, 2018 Super User Posted June 20, 2018 There is already modification drag click sound available for curado 70 and 50e series and soon enough Shimano will corporate that part to make drag click sound into mid-end reel like Curado (some of the high end reel already have this feature) Quote
d-camarena Posted June 20, 2018 Posted June 20, 2018 I agree, theres nothing like my fishing partner hearing my drag and rolling his eyes? Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted June 20, 2018 Super User Posted June 20, 2018 I do looooove the sound, but not enough to look for reels that might have it. I'll save it for long runs from stripers. Quote
Hulkster Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 I didn't know any baitcasters had drag clickers. in the late 90s when I first got serious the shimanos I was using (and dad's daiwa) didn't have clickers. nowdays most don't either. how common is a drag clicker on a baitcaster? Quote
