Tackett1980 Posted June 20, 2018 Posted June 20, 2018 I just got done spooling my big surf spinning reel with around 500 yards of 50lb braid. I spun it all on way too loose. Should I take all this line off and start over? What’s the best way to take it off? Quote
Junger Posted June 20, 2018 Posted June 20, 2018 I would, do you have an empty reel sitting around? If so just spool it on that one, then put it back in your big surf reel. Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 20, 2018 Posted June 20, 2018 If you have another reel that will hold that much line, you could use it to take the braid off and then feed it back on under the tension of its drag. The downside would be line twist. There should be a way to avoid it, but other than taking the used spool the line came with, adding a spindle of some kind (a dowel rod perhaps), chucking it in a drill and spinning it off in the opposite direction is the only thought I have. Move the topic over to rods, reels and line forum and maybe you’ll get some ideas from there. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 20, 2018 Global Moderator Posted June 20, 2018 If you have a big open area, I'd tie it to something and walk it off, then reel it all back on under tension. I do this with my reels sometimes but I realize not everyone lives in the middle of nowhere. Quote
Tackett1980 Posted June 20, 2018 Author Posted June 20, 2018 Hmm no empty reels and no open area. i might have an old kids kite laying around I could use the twine handle off of. any other ideas? Quote
LionHeart Posted June 20, 2018 Posted June 20, 2018 What you need is a contraption to do this work. Attatch a dowel or some like object to a power drill or something? Walking it off sounds like no fun. Let us know what you end up doing. Or you could just cast it. It's only 500 yards. ? 3 1 Quote

A 4" carriage bolt, 2 washers and a wing nut will do the job as suggested above... then hang onto this new tool as you'll probably need it again & again & again! oe Quote
Tackett1980 Posted June 20, 2018 Author Posted June 20, 2018 Will the line go back on the reel ok after I strip it off? Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted June 20, 2018 Super User Posted June 20, 2018 I've never had an issue re-spooling PE line and I've done it many times. I wouldn't re-spool a monofilament line. oe Quote

How much is the line worth? Time is finite.... Jack up your car, tape line to tire, spin it by hand wrapping it on tire. 17" tire is 53.4" of line each revolution. You only need 337 turns of the tire......Smile Garden hose crank up thingy? Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted June 21, 2018 Super User Posted June 21, 2018 The kite idea will work, or you can drag it behind a boat. A salt water conventional or fly reel will work too, unspool it from the side with the drag loose, not off the bail. Quote
