Ralph Nicholas Vito Posted June 19, 2018 Posted June 19, 2018 I live in Melrose MA. Just north of Boston about a 19 - 25 minute drive to boston and i'm looking for somewhere to fish for bass or other fish that is close by (few minutes to an hour away tops) i shore fish mostly and will soon be fishing from a kayak (as soon as i get roof racks for my SUV) was just wondering if anyone knew of any fishing spots close by I also own a home in Brewster MA right on Long Pond and have seen them have bass fishing tourneys on the lake but don't know where else i could fish on the cape (don't care how far from my location it is when im down there) Any and all suggestions are appreciated Quote
Ratherbefishing75 Posted June 19, 2018 Posted June 19, 2018 There are plenty of nice spots along the south shore the nipoff Route 24 in bridgewater and Wompatuck State pond in Hanover right behind the Townhall I’ve had lots of good luck there as it isn’t over fished Quote
Dunks N Dinks Posted June 19, 2018 Posted June 19, 2018 For the cape my top 5 are as follows... 1) Lake Wequaquet (Barnstable) 2) Mashpee-Wakeby (Mashpee) 3) Long Pond (Brewster) 4) Cliffs Pond (Harwich) 5) Hinckleys Pond (Brewster) Quote
Deeare Posted June 19, 2018 Posted June 19, 2018 How about El pond!!! I use to catch some decent fish at golden hills, breakheart, Harold Parker, haggets. You can catch biggies at lake attitash (40mins) but make sure you fish the deep part of the lake. Quote
YoTone Posted June 19, 2018 Posted June 19, 2018 sheep pond is right next to long pond. its where i caught my first smallie Quote

Janderson45 Posted June 19, 2018 Posted June 19, 2018 Finding good spots next to or near the city can be a little tough sometimes, typically I like to head towards more central mass or southeastern mass. Closest spots to Melrose that I've fished and could recommend are Spy pond in Arlington, the Charles River (from watertown and points west) the concord/Sudbury river (might be a decent bet in a kayak or with waders) and the Sudbury reservoir (make sure it's the right reservoir lots of them are illegal to fish). Attitash is a respectable fishery that I've been to a couple of times (it's all the way up in amesbury) other than that I've never fished any of the north shore lakes or ponds, I'm sure there are some good ones though. I live on the south shore and work in Watertown+Boston so I've been trying to figure out some nice quick and easy spots along the way to fish before or after work. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted June 20, 2018 Super User Posted June 20, 2018 I can’t help with anything north of Boston, but Ponkapog in Canton is good, not over pressured. 3+ pound bass & pickerel are pretty common. You’ll need a kayak & cart to get to the launch from the Randolph street parking area. It’s 6’ deep and weedy. Houghton’s pond in the Blue Hills is wadeable. It’s pressured but you can usually grab bass & pickerel in warm weather. It’s stocked with trout in fall & winter. No boats of any kind are allowed here. Sunset Lake in Braintree, adjacent to the HS, was good before the town killed off the weeds in 2016. I’ve not been back since. Lastly is Whitmans Pond in Weymouth. It has a concrete ramp on Middle Street. I’ve never done particularly well here but have heard ‘tales’ from others. Almost any kettle pond in Plymouth is worth a shot. Some charge $15/day for non-Plymouth residents during the summer. This thread has a lot of good information on it: Quote
NEBass123 Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 I used to fish the North Shore a lot so I put a few near Melrose and some worth making the trek to. Spot Pond - It is right next to Melrose and has good shore access. There are some really good fish in here, but unfortunately, the only way to put a kayak on it is to rent from the Spot Pond Boathouse which is pricey or just sneak one on. There are some nice little ponds to shore fish from in an industrial/apartment complex to the left of market street in Wakefield. Middleton Pond - It is farther from Melrose than the others, but has good shore fishing and some good fish in it. Lake Cochichewick - This is one of my favorite lakes in the area. Definitely use a kayak, but it has a lot of good fish in it. If you make the trek here, DM me and I will give you some good spots. Quote

I have fished at spot pond before the people there NEVER mentioned bass being in there they have said to have stocked it with trout so i was thinking maybe that's all that was in there since they use to put chemicals in there to kill all the algae and such i would have thought all the fish would be dead and now all that's in there is trout ? I haven't been there in 2 years, but the last time I was there I caught some good LM. I can't imagine they died off in the last 2 years especially if they had been putting chemicals in before that time. There are good size LM and SM in that pond. Quote

My father told me they put chemicals in the water so i don't know for sure if that's true or not he has lived here all his life so i would think he would know better than me but if you caught them in there then that means they are there lol thanks for the info Also there is wrights pond but i think you have to be a medford resident to fish or be up in that area ? Deeare Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 Anyone can fish wrights pond but if you want to park in the lot you need a Medford sticker. Just park at the rink and walk over. ive never heard of chemicals being put in spot. It's a backup reservoir so I doubt it. Quote
