Anyone who has used this rod, is it sensitive enough for a good jig rod? I am willing to spend up to $200 on a  jig rod, are there better options than a sierra at this price point? Also, is it more sensitive than the Fury? Ive seen people say its not and people say its much more sensitive. They are on sale at TW and im considering buying one. Thanks for the input.

For a 100% certain answer you could email dobyns and ask if there is a difference between the two blanks. Which I'm sure there is. From that you would at least know the blank is of a higher quality on the sierra, although that doesn't always lead to a better feel.

Dobyns responded to me multiple times relatively quickly when I inquired about their rods. Gary and Richard both took the time to explain their rods and their preferred uses in a detailed way that answered all the questions I had. If you need an answer quickly, a phone call is probably your best option. I don’t own any Sierra rods, but have heard they are similar to the Champions and better than the Savvy series they replaced. They should be a bump up from the Fury series for sure.

Sierra and Savy are the same blank. Different guides and cosmetics.

$200 for a Jig rod?  Daiwa Tatula or St Croix Avid.  Or find a lightly used Champion XP 744.

TW has a sale right now on them.

I'd still go with a Tatula for $110-140

I have a Sierra 734c and so far have been very pleased with it. It’s relativly new to me and have very little use with it compared to my other new rods due to purchasing so many at the same time. I don’t have another dobyns to compare too but as far as balance goes it’s one of the best balanced rods I own. I purchased a daiwa zillion and it was going replace the dobyns but I think I prefer the feel of the dobyns more. I wanted a champion but the 734c was sold in the champion and champion xp at the time and the Sierra was on a close out price.

This is why it is tempting. Im going to spend the most on my jig rod for now, because i need sensitivity, and its on sale for only 127$. However, Ive heard people say it isnt a sensitive blank. I will buy it if its a sensitive enough blank, otherwise im going to save up for a used champion extreme. Cant find a solid review on the sierra...

What is sensitive to someone else might feel like a dead weight to you. Personally, my jig rod is a Dobyns Extreme DX745. But a buddy has the Champion DC744 and he loves it.

I have heard Dobyns are good rods and they have great customer service, but I have read reviews that they aren’t the most sensitive for their price. The Daiwa Tatula Rod is more sensitive I’ve heard and has as many good reviews.

Very true.  Read a thread earlier today that reminded me of that very fact.  Poster knocked a rod series as having little sensitivity while I have read previous posts extolling that lines sensitivity.

I own a Sierra and have owned an Avid. If it was for a jig rod at $200 go MH Avid or 5 power Sierra, both will get the job done for you. In my hands the Avid was the more sensitive rod (703 SF and 7 foot ML Avid spinning). That being said the most sensitive rod I have fished at $200 has been the Tatula Elite line (same blank as the originals from what I can tell).

For what it is worth I fish a bunch of Dobyns as does my wife. She owns a Sierra 705SF spinning rod. That is a very nice rod. It is her jig and frog rod.

As for the statement that the Sierra and Savvy are the same blank that is incorrect. The Sierra series is a slower graphite blank than a Fury, Savvy or either Champion line rod.  The Fury sorta made the Savvy the odd rod out. The Sierra line of rods perform very well, although I prefer my Champions and their quicker blanks)  but since the Fury rods priced out for less than the Savvy rods and the Sierra was going to sell for right about what a Savvy sold for they were dropped. Gary originally continued to sell the Savvy with micro guides only because his customers requested he do so. After time he made the Sierra rods available in micro guides. According to him if he could he would not sell a rod with micro guides, but a portion of his clients want it so he does it.

As for getting a quick answer to any Dobyns rod question pick up the phone. Both Richard and Gary are happy to talk rods with you. If they are both not available there are some great guys in the warehouse who know just about as much and will be happy to aide you. They have been really helpful for me in the past.

I have one other source of good intel on his stuff if you need it. Email me at  fishnkamp@comcast.net  and I will give you the source.
