My PB is just about 7 pounds. I just got back from bank fishing a pond. I was using 6 inch lizards. Hooked into a giant, got it close, realized it was way bigger than my PB, and then with one final jump and head shake it got off about a foot away from being landed. For a split second every part of me was ready to jump in and grab it real quick before I realized how dumb that would be.

This will happen to everyone sooner or later.

In fact, yesterday on the Potomac I had something big hit my bait and after I turned her back towards the boat, she decided to go visit a relative or a friend and she took off, popping my line.

I was sick. She was the second giant bass we would have had in the well and she would have increased our overall weight by at least 3, if not 4 pounds.

But that's fishing and it was totally my fault. We always have to have fresh line, no knicks, cuts or abrasions in the line, a strong knot, and a proper rod to fight her. What I did not realize was that I had scraped my line against the bridge piling which weakened it and that is where it broke off.

Live and learn.

I wouldn’t have been dumb if you indeed did grab her.

I  was fishing from bank and cast a jig and pork frog over a log .I jigged it a couple of times , it felt heavy and reared back with a mighty hook set . I knew it was a big bass and the only way to land it was to get it over the log . I did not let up , applied pressure to turn its head skyward hoping it would jump . The fish came out of the water and I think it was the biggest bass I ever had . I got him  over the log and then the hook came out . I did everything right and deserved to catch that bass but as William Munny  said from the movie Unforgiven  " Deservin aint got nothing to do with it."

I understand that it happens and I'm pretty much over it. Just a bummer. Consolation is knowing you can catch the big ones.

Glaucus, this may or may not make you feel better. At the least it gives perspective:

Having money on the line probably makes it a dozen times worse.

How about having a potential state record in the boat with no scale and no camera cause your cell phone went over board and regulations surrounding the spawn require immediate release upon capture... (NH)... true story... 20 years ago. I almost quit fishing figuring that was the fish of my lifetime.

We've all been there.  All you can do is say a few choice words and get back to fishing.

Watching those guys lose fish makes ME sick! It would be like if a perfect touchdown pass was made but the ball suddenly hit an invisible wall on its way there. Nothing you can do about it sometimes.
