Glaucus Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 My buddy and I found a fairly large crystal clear pond. Fishing wacky Senkos we were pulling out healthy Largemouth and Smallmouth from it. Caught upwards of 40-50 each, mix of both species. I've of course seen bass following hooked bass before, but something especially interesting was going on. Sometimes when we would catch a LMB, as it got closer we could see a SMB attacking it's mouth as if to steal the bait from it. Never vice versa. Btw this place is forever our secret. Bass bit every type of lure readily and plentifully, no signs of fish being caught before or any signs of humans having been there. Quote
Eric J Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 I had one of those once... then someone talked.... someone always talks... Now he sleeps with the fishes... ? 2 3 Quote
Glaucus Posted June 17, 2018 Author Posted June 17, 2018 What the heck is the deal with SMB attacking the face of hooked LMB? Quote

papajoe222 Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 This occurs a lot more often than you think. I fish water that you can see bottom in 20ft. and I regularly see fish take my bait only to have another attempt to steal it. Heck, I've even seen one fish spit out a crank, only to have another inhale it. There is a bounty of forage in that strip pit, so I don't believe it's from a shortage of food. I attribute it to the aggressive nature of the fish. When you read or hear of firing up a school of bass, more than likely this is the type of response that starts it off. Quote
bassh8er Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 I’d also add that SM are notorious for it and it probably didn’t matter that you had a LM hooked when the SM was attacking it. They are equal opportunity bait stealers. 1 Quote

Basseditor Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 It happens fishing spoons for schooling bass a lot. I saw a video about adding stinger hooks the the front of spoons so you can catch them two at a time. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 17, 2018 Global Moderator Posted June 17, 2018 Good time to fish something like a donkey rig and try to double up. Smallmouth do it a lot but largemouth do it too. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 17, 2018 Super User Posted June 17, 2018 Years ago I was fishing for catfish with doughbait. There was a cat swimming up to the bait and a largemouth came out of nowhere and grabbed it from right in front of the catfish. When you're hungry you don't get to picky about what you eat. Quote
