Jmp_37 Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 My new rod came with this ugly cork... I would like to try some Winn grips and would like to see if anyone liked there’s and if the cork underneath stayed in relatively good condition. I would also like to take a look at cork sealer but am a little bit worried about it. 1 Quote
Vilas15 Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Brand new? I'd return it if possible. Cork sealer isn't going to make it any prettier, just seal it and make it a shade darker. No experience with Winn grips. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Looks like cork filler, but on a brand new rod???? Quote
Big-Bass Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 What rod is that? I would get a new one. That is a lot of filler. Quote
LionHeart Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I have Winn Grips on 2 of my rods, one of which I paid to have them installed. Love it! There are videos online that show how to install it yourself but I didn't want to risk messing it up. I think it cost about $40 to have them installed but surely it could be done for cheaper. No regrets whatsoever. Quote
Jmp_37 Posted June 16, 2018 Author Posted June 16, 2018 I’m curious to if you can wrap it around the butt end, or do you have to stop once you get there? Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 16, 2018 Super User Posted June 16, 2018 Winn Grip uses a double stick tape at the start of the wrap and the finish end, the adhesive strip on the edges holds the wrap seam togther. I haven't removed a Winns Grip yet so don't know if any adhesive contacts the what is under it other then the double stick tape ends. The problem today is finding premium cork, fillers are commonly used and the rod in the photo is poor workmanship. Tom Quote
Stephen B Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Most all the rod makers are doing this as the price of premium cork is extremely expensive. You will see very low grades of cork in rods under $150 and especially under $100 that's why a lot use EVA. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 16, 2018 Super User Posted June 16, 2018 So many other materials today that are great. Cork is nice but crap cork is a major disapointment. Carbon grips are amazing, and being a cork guy I was hesitant. Cfx and batston, both make them and are way above Eva in my opinion. I did not like the feel of wingrips but some do. They may have a familiar and comfortable feel if you golf. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 16, 2018 Super User Posted June 16, 2018 I would take cheap cork over EVA & Winn grips over any other! 2 Quote
LionHeart Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I did not use the Winn Grip tape. What I have is an actual grip that is installed after removal of your original factory grip. I ordered mine from mudhole.com. 1 Quote

I love the grip of Winn grips but also love the feel of traditional cork (St Croix rods). Quote
LionHeart Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Ya know I was afraid it would affect sensitivity because it just seems like it would but honestly I haven't detected any difference. Then again, most of my hand is grabbing the reel or touching the blank during the retrieve, so that may have something to do with it. Quote
Jmp_37 Posted June 17, 2018 Author Posted June 17, 2018 Thank you all, I sent a complaint to the company because shipping would cost 80$, just as much as the rod. Quote

That's unfortunate, by the time you ship it back and they'll deduct the original shipping you'll probably be out of half you original cost. I would find a different rod brand next time you buy that gives you a better quality product & service. That is one thing nice with Tackle Warehouse is they give you a free return label if you not happy with the product. I've purchased a couple rods that I wasn't happy with and received full refund. Simple & easy return process, it shows me they take care of their customers. Quote
