With all the techniques out there I was thinking about my style of fishing and tried to put it in a box. Thinking of my own style or when I am successful on the water I have come to the conclusion that when I do well in a tournament or fun fishing is when I am able to frog, punch, big wormin', or pitch t-rigs. I have in my arsenal 2 crankbait rods, a chatterbait rod, 2 rods that I usually have topwater, spinnerbaits, or buzzbaits, a 2 jig rods, and 2 finesse sticks. Now on occasion I have had really successful days with other baits and also days where it took a variety of baits to be successful.

This made me curious as to what you guys/gals would prefer is to be a jack of all trades or really good at just a few. Also, when out on the water, what do you tend to reach for? 24 rods on the deck and how many actually get used out of your arsenal? Do you actually fish a bunch of different techniques or do you tend to grab the same rod (technique) over and over?

I read often or see on video/audio that when the pros are asked a question that they always respond with there is a time and a place for everything and they beat around the bush or give a long winded non-answer.

When I'm fun fishing I always reach for my pitching sticks, jig rods, and deep Texas rig rods. But in the few tournaments I fish, I try to adjust my techniques to the conditions. But that doesn't always happen and a lot of times I end up with one of my favorite combos in my hand due to conditions and or the confidence to land bigger fish on those techniques. But the lakes I fish set up will for those. Deep brush, weed lines, and shallow wood cover, so maybe that's why I have so much confidence in them because that's what I've grew up fishing? But if I had to go to a deep, rocky, clean lake I'd have a hard time adjusting to fishing things like drop shots and Crankbaits as well as I fish my heavy(er) cover techniques.

I brought this up last year and got a lot of differing opinions.  The consensus was yeah, but...

I don't tourney fish.  I fish mainly plastics (90% T rig), jigs and spinners.  I am pretty good with those.  Other baits I don't like as much. I love frogs but miss a lot of fish.  Hate treble hooks.

I tend to think most guys are good at 2 or 3 teqniques, and concentrate on those most of the time. I may be wrong here, but I think confidence plays a huge part of this. After 30 + years, for me its soft plastics,  finesse baits and topwater. I could really fish all day with 3 rods and various baits, because that's what has worked best for me.
