Pretty awesome update, but I’m gonna stick with the standard reels and let others be the guinea pigs. I’ll probably wait until Gen 2 until I jump on board.

Big fan of the K-series. I bought about 8 from American Legacy, plus a couple Stradics, including one that’s in the mail as we speak. There isn’t a better fishing reel retailer out there.

I never feel the need to be the first to anything, especially when in a few months down the line it'll be on sale somewhere, with the potential for a stacking discount.

That is beautiful, but I hope I won't need to use a reel like that until maybe in my 90s when I might not have a fast enough thumb anymore to do what electronic circuitry will gladly do for me at that age, lol.

Down, boy! Get back in that cage, RIGHT NOW!!!! Don't make me repeat myself.  What? My wallet is magically lifting from my back pocket? So the battle rages with the Bait Monkey, lol.

This is pretty much Gen4 or 5 for the DC system and this same reel has pretty much been around for a while, as the Scorpion DC. This one looks on paper to possibly be a little better, or equal, to that reel.

Yeah, I was going to bring this up. DC reels have been around for over a decade.

There was a thread a while ago about the possibility of a Curado DC and I was one of the people who said/thought it would never happen....Can't remember who was in the thread or when it was, but this is my official "I was wrong" post ;).

I've got a couple E-Series Scorpion DC's and love them, so I'm looking forward to these.

Does it have an aluminum frame? Because I’m just reading hagane body in the description?

The curado 200 k describes an aluminum frame with ci4 side plates?

No.  Hagane is some Japanese phrase for 'strong' or 'sturdy'.  It is not a type of material but some phraseology Shimano applies to their reels.   It is commonly applied to aluminum frame reels but there has been a plastic spinning reel Shimano used the Hagane word on to emphasise the strength of their fancy plastic.  'Hagane' is pretty much meaningless at this point.  They might as well write 'Excellent & Luxurious' on the outside like Shishamo.

Do you know which spinning reel Shimano advertised the term Hagane with?

This was Shimano's official description in 2013. It's the same wording that you'd find on Shimano's NA website right now. "The Hagane Body is made of highly rigid metals such as aluminum and magnesium. With its weight reduced to the limit, the Hagane Body eliminates flex, warp, and distortion of the reel, allowing smooth reeling with little power loss. Furthermore, the body protects the engagement of the Hagane Gear and the Micro Module Gear System from shock, while maintaining smooth operation."

The official Shimano wording on Hagane Body in the South East Asian market is, "Made of highly rigid metals such as aluminium and magnesium. Weight has been greatly reduced while reel flexure, warp and distortion has been eliminated, allowing for smooth reeling with little power loss."

The same is said in the Latin American version of Shimano's website, though you'd have to translate it.

The European website uses this wording: "The HAGANE Body is produced from highrigidity aluminium or magnesium. This creates stiffness and impact resistance, while at the same time eliminating flexing of the body. The result is a rocksolid housing and support for the moving internal gearing and greater efficiency throughout the reel."

Anyway, it looks like I was mistaken -- Hagane Body is not a particular alloy, but a marketing descriptor to indicate that the reel is made of Al or Mg. At least, the one consistency between all of these descriptions is that the body is metal. Maybe the reel you're talking about was referring to the gears? I wouldn't know unless I knew the model you're talking about.

Pretty good description of the process in this video.  It started in reference to manufacturing process of the gears and how they are processed/forged.  In short it's a description for cold forging with a single high pressure stamp.

The Stradic Ci4 has 'Hagane' written on it.  It probably refers to the gears being metal but else would they be made out of? The Hagane labeling is a little silly IMO.

I definitely agree. Marketing is complete garbage, otherwise most of us wouldn't be here on a forum looking for advice on what rods and reels to get. It's like that stupid diner advertising as having "The best chili in the state" when I know for a fact they get it frozen in bags from Sysco.

I would recommend not making any early moves on rods/reels. There are a ton more surprises expected. Wait until after ICAST. You will thank me later. ?

Met MGL DC, and Aldebaran upgrade to name a few from Shimano.

So the conclusion of the matter is (unless shimano changes their description) that it’s made of plastic or “Hagane” well that just sucks ...

ci4 is better than “hagane” I don’t know? But I had the Nasci with the hagane stamp on it an that reel was a disappointment..I sold it on Craigslist for half what I paid for it that’s how much I didn’t like the reel. I have a couple of reels made of ci4 magnesium, so I trust that material, but I never liked that term “ hagane” it basically just means it’s strong. Like you said it’s just marketing.

Hagane is not a different kind of material, or anything magical. It's just a concept Shimano uses to make better feeling reels. "Hagane" means steel in Japanese. So, the idea of a hagane body is to be more rigid, as strong as steel, even though it's aluminum, magnesium, or Ci4. Hagane gears are cold forged and use a precision machining process to make them stronger and smoother. They're still brass or some derivative of aluminum, same as before.

i have to question the need for these digital controlled casting reels.

once you learn to use a baitcaster you never backlash anyway.

I have the Curado 200i and it casts amazing with no backlash.

the question is, how much is it?

When I got back into fishing, I bought a Calais DC as a way to short-cut re-learning to through a baitcaster.

It was worth every penny, just for that.

These days, that reel sits on a rig set up to throw big in-line spinners, big spoons and other pike/musky baits that don't make the jump to "big". On a 7' 9' TFO MH rod, the combo will about put a 1 1/8 oz. spoon in orbit...into a 20 MPH wind...

With the Curado DC coming in ~$250...it's on my radar.

Please don't tell me that I have to change the battery in my reel........:P

The Shimano DC braking system uses no batteries. The spool spinning during the cast is the "power generator" thanks to magnetic electricity. It's a very intelligent design.

Here's the video from Shimano explaining how it works.

I was thinking about getting one and I realized I don't really need one as my backlashes decrease every year.  The only time I would feel it's benefits are on very windy days when I wouldn't be able to hear that cool zzzzzzz noise that is really 90% of a dc reel experience in my limited experience.  I also looked at the brand new reels sitting on my desk that I literally use as paperweights.  I finally beat the bait monkey and slept sounder than I have in years.  Then woke up and preordered one too.  I think I'm going to have to wait a bit longer than you as I understand the lefties will be in stock a month or so later.

Yeah no doubt? I was going to wait a few days for the 4 of July, 15 or 20 % off but I did that last year and they didn’t offer the discount on the k man I was ticked also I didn’t get it till like late December or January so I decided order now!!! Because I guarantee everyone is going to wait for 4 of July weekend discounts and the orders are going to be threw  the roof making waiting time for the reel longer.

What changed my mind was the ALF website if you join their newsletter you get 10% off after you confirm through email.  Can't wait.

Tackle Warehouse is having their 4th of July Sale. 15% off almost everything..

This includes the Shimano Curado DC.

I just pre-ordered mine. $212 after discount. If you're seriously interested in this reel I would pre-order now.

Unless you really don't care about the savings.
