Literally finding the perfect lure

Yesterday I was fishing in my favorite spot when I saw this crankbait floating in the water. Looked pretty sweet so I rescued it and tied it on. First cast I caught this big brute - pushing 16in possibly a three pounder or more. Caught a few smaller ones on the crankbait, too.

 

 

 

Not really sure what kind of lure this is - I mean like model/style and manufacturer, but it certainly changed my ideas about what to use in my usual spot. It's called Linear Park and it's built along the side of a large well planted burm adjacent to our power plant. The inlet has a very rocky shoreline which I usually fish with spinners and Senkos, but it never occurred to me to use a squarebill along all those rocks.

 

 

Interesting it seems a literally found the perfect lure. I guess I need to go out and find a few more eh?

It is a Strike King KVD Square Bill in orange belly craw.  Nice fish, I have had good luck with that lure myself.

Hey thanks. Would it be a 1.5 ounce or a 2.5? I'm not very good with sizes. I'll have to get a few different colors/patterns and try them out, I know KVD makes great lures because I've had great success with their strike king spinner baits. I even have a pair of KVD snippers/split ring pliers that cut braid really well.

It looks small so it might even be a 1.0. Just measure the overall body length and then go to Strike King's website.  They list the body length for each size.

It's a KVD for sure, looks a 1.0 to me. 

 

Better change the hooks, that front one was starting to open up from that fish.

Funny thing is when I caught him he had somehow got all three of the treble hooks through his lip. There was no way to get them out without causing him some harm so I had to cut off the trebles, release him and then put a new treble hook on it. I'm thinking of getting some new Mustad treble hooks just for this purpose.

Heh, I have one of those sitting next to me on the desk at the moment. Looks like a 1.5 or 1.0. Good crankbait, and rocky banks like that are the perfect place to use it.

A friend found this bait in a tree at a local lake.

I told him it was a double plopper and goes for $17 to $19. He said "Why would anybody throw a bait that expensive?".

SK Pro Model 1, 2" long with size 4 treble hooks, orange craw color.

No reason to cut off treble hooks to unhook a bass if you have needle nose pliers, pop each barb out seperately.

The hole was the size of the shaft of the treble hook and all three trebles we're on the other side of that hole in his lip. I have no idea how he managed that but there was no way I could get it out without tearing him up. So I had to cut the trebles off in order to get it out.

Thank you @Gundog for sharing that story.  I've got 45 minutes of work left, and that gave me a laugh that will get me through the night.

I rescued a crankbait that a fellow local member sent me a picture of sitting stuck in a tree at a park we like. First time I used it (this morning before work), I missed what appeared to be about around a 2 lber which would easily have been my PB lol. Biggest bass I've ever seen any way. It grabbed it swimming away from me off the bank, I did my normal side sweep set and totally missed it! Dangit! Maybe next time...

I have that exact lure, that might be the 1.5, I have the same one only in the shallow runner version. I use it only flats that are only 1 or 2 feet deep ad it works well. 

 

On the subject of found lures, a couple of years ago I found a Luckycraft RC 1.5 floating around, has turned out to be one of my most productive lures.

A few years ago i was bank fishing a lake here. And ran into another regular so we got to talking and he was trying to talk me into fishing a square bill like him and i was trying to talk him into using the lipless i was using both of us swearing by both baits to be the best at that location. 

Well a few days later his bait caught my eye hanging from a tree branch. Having braid on I thought well if i toss my bait up and hang the tip of the branch i can get both off by pulling it down low enough. 

So after rescuing said bait and mine. I was amazed at the lack of chrome black paint that was left on it. As it had appereantly caught a great number of fish. 

That bait caught fish every where i used it. Till i hung it and lost it later on. Hope it floated back up and some other fella has it now.

I catch a lot of bass on a lipless Rapala Rippin Rap, too. Chrome w/blue back.
