Looking into buying a new rod to throw smaller topwater baits like poppers during the summer and jerkbaits during the colder months.

What’s the difference between the 704cb graphite and 704cb Glass besides the material? Which techniques are better on each rod?

Thabks in advance!

I'm interested in this thread as well. A couple days ago I posted about the Zillion 7'2 crankbait graphite vs glass versions and got no response. The best I could find out is Tackle Tour's review that the Tatula blank, which should be similar to the Zillion blank.

I ended up getting the Zillion 7'2 MH/R-G version, because if the tip section is glass, it SHOULD be softer than graphite, which is what I wanted however I don't have both rods to compare so I am not certain for sure. I will say, the R-G version of this rod is heavier than my other Zillion/Tatulas by a couple oz's, and is noticeably thicker in diameter of the blank. It almost looks like a Heavy or Mag Heavy rod, but it's a MH.

Well, first off, graphite is more sensitive and lighter than fiberglass, hence the popularity. I've got a few Dobyn's graphite rods and a 735cb glass rod. I would think you would like the graphite 704cb as topwater/jerkbait rod, lighter in your hand and it will have a bit more tip than the glass rod. The one thing that I won't be able to explain, but you'll notice right away when you use a glass rod, is that it loads up on the cast a little differently.

Just curious, is the thickness of your 735 glass rod thicker than your other Dobyn's?

The glass rod will be stronger and thicker and maybe has a little more bend to it. The graphite rod will be lighter, and maybe more sensitive.

Now I have a 7'2' MH/R Tatula glass cranking rod (graphite handle, glass past the first guide) as well as the 7' Mojo Bass MH/MF Spinnerbait rod. The action and power isn overall quite similar on both rods, but I can't say the graphite Mojo is necessarily more sensitive than the glass Tatula. I'm quite surprised at how sensitive the Tatula is - the vibrations are pleasantly muted, but I do feel everything that goes on. I have fished the same weed beds with both, and I swear I can feel things on the glass rod that I can't on the graphite Mojo, and I don't think the Mojo is a bad rod by any means either. tackletour.com did a review on the same rod as well and also said they were surprised how sensitive the rod is.

Not that I need the most sensitive rod for moving baits...

What's the sensitivity like on the Zillion? As I said, I'm surprised by the Tatula's sensitivity. And it's actually on the stiffer side of a cranking rod, largely geared towards deep divers but that also makes it good for fishing cranks around stumps, and spinnerbaits, which was what I was hoping for when I bought it.

I haven't fished it yet, I'm still rounding up the arsenal of cranks, so far only 2 Evergreen SH-3's (1-3ft). It's a new technique for me honestly...I used to only bank fish so cranking = lost lures 50% of the time, but I'll be throwing them on my small bass boat soon. Is your Tatula G noticeably thicker than your other rods? My Zillion is, even compared to a Zillion 741HRB.

There is a significant difference between these two models. The glass/composite is very moderate in it's action, much more so than the 705CB Glass.  It's a fun rod for Bandit 100's, 1/8 ounce Speed Traps and similar small baits.  The standard 704CB is a much more active blank and even though a moderate fast action, has much more power. It too handles 1/4 ounce baits but tops out around 5/8 ounce. It is my jerk bait rod and is a great top water rod in the aforementioned weight range.

My 735cb glass is much heavier and thicker than my other Dobyn's. The 704cb is a great rod for topwater, jerkbaits, and smaller cranks, like shad raps or little johns.

Yes, it is the thickest bass and heaviest bass rod I own, although it doesn't really bother me to be honest. It also makes an excellent rod for up to 1/2oz spinnerbaits and crankbaits, as there's a fair amount of hidden reserve, so it gets a lot of usage, probably more than any other rod I own.

When I get a bass boat, I will add a M/M rod for open water cranking, with bit more flex. Since I don't own a boat and it's so common I get caught in weeds or hit branches and stumps in many areas I fish, the faster action and more backbone is perfect. But I haven't really lost a fish yet with a spinnerbait or a crankbait - the only one was my fault for not paying attention and setting the hook.
