Sharkicane Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 Hey all, I am looking at getting a 3rd rig currently I have a finesse/spinning rig, and I have my everything else rig which is a 6'5 MH XF Daiwa Alexa. With the heat turning way up in texas and fishing from the bank I feel like I need to add something that can get some distance with to my arsenal. Since I can only cast out so far with the 6'5. As summer goes on I feel like some of the bites I might have get deep/far from the bank to get. That is what's driving me to think about investing in a 3rd rig. The primary purpose of this rod would be throwing moving baits, top water, carolina rig, crank baits, spinner baits, and maybe some swim jigs. Also, I can only get one rod at the moment :(, otherwise I would probably get 2-3 of these. Not sure if anyone is familiar with Hook Spit Performance Rods or not, but that is one of the options. From what I have heard and read they seem to be pretty good rods. All 4 of the rods I am listing are under $50 bucks which I feel like is a stellar deal that I should not pass up. Here are my choices for rods,it is semi-limited because this particular series is being discontinued.(They are changing the color of one series and the other they will no longer be selling any other brand rods but their own). Hook Spit Rod - All of these are Heavy rated seems all the Mediums and MH have been raided already since this one has been on sale for a while. Crankenstein - 7'4 Hvy - Mod (1/2 oz to 1.5 oz) This one had a decent tip to it, for a heavy it didnt feel like a broom stick. (so far I am leaning towards this one) The Punch - 7'6 - Heavy - Fast - XF (3/8oz - 1.25 oz) This is a for sure a broom stick so I am thinking it wont work for what I need it to but idk. Big Tex - 7'3 - 7'5 - Heavy - Fast (3/8 oz - 1.25 oz) This one had a little bit of tip but it still felt pretty stiff. Daiwa Alexa - 7'2 MH - XF tip - The exact same rod I have in 6'5 but bigger. While I do really like my 6'5 Daiwa I feel like maybe the other rods might offer more in the way of versatility and better action for the applications. Any tips/advice on which one to go with would be much appreciated. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 13, 2018 Super User Posted June 13, 2018 Never heard of Hook Spit Performance Rods before. At the $50 mark I would look at the Daiwa Aird X 7'3" MHF. Walmart currently has it for $50.30. Might find a couple dollars cheaper on ebay. Quote
Sharkicane Posted June 13, 2018 Author Posted June 13, 2018 I think I went overboard with the details I guess my point is what length/rating is ideal for a rod that can be used for the things I mentioned in the original post? Quote
kenmitch Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 A longer heavy action rod won't increase your casting distance. Most likely it'll decrease it. For me at least my 6'6" medium fast action rod casts farther with more accuracy than my 7' MH fast action rod. Using a 1/2oz lipless crankbait as a comparison. Medium action gives somewhat more slingshot effect I guess. Doesn't sound like your throwing anything heavy enough for the listed rods. Have you tried tuning your reel for more distance on your current setup? Quote

When you say tuning what do mean? Quote

The thinner your line is, the easier it will be to cast, so going with 20-30lb braid would probably help your casting distance a little bit. As for rod length, longer rods will cast further assuming everything else is the same. But, if you go from a 6'6" medium to a 7'4" heavy, throwing a 1/4oz squarebill, your rod will not load up as much in the cast, so you'll probably lose more distance from that than you gain from the length. Looking at what you're talking about throwing, I'd look for a 7' MH Fast rod. You could go with 7'2" or 7'3" if you really want to. Quote

I like to set my spool tension to a couple clicks beyond no spool wiggle and brake to minimum and use my thumb to control backlash and depth as needed. I have a lot of hours using the reel so backlash isn't a concern for me. Takes good eye thumb coordination that comes with lots and lots of practice. Works for me better than setting it up the way one is suppose to. If fish aren't biting I'll just do some target practice working on depth my depth perception. Quote
bunz559 Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Every company has their specs differently when it comes to building their rods. Even rods from the same company but different series can have different feel although listed with same specs. Generally speaking through, I'd go with something in the Medium Heavy with a fast action for your target usage. MH may not be ideal in everyone's perspective, but it's definitely one of the more versatile specs. My next choice would be a Medium power and Fast action rod. Quote
