Nathan Balog Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 I’ve been fishing spinning reels my whole life and decided to finally get myself a nice one and bought a Penn Battle 3000. I like it but I definitely have more issues with it than my cheap reels as far as casting and the line tangling/kinking mid cast. It’s gotten to a point where I probably won’t buy another penn reel. So before I give up, is it possible that it could be this particular reel, and if I replace the spool or something the issue won’t be as bad? I just put a whole new spool of 8lb test on yesterday, by the end of the day I had no line because I had to keep biting off the line and re tying from so many knots forming. I don’t get it. Quote
Rahlow Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 I haven’t used a spinning reel in years, but if I remember correctly, they would do as you say if the line wasn’t spooled on correctly. Since you use them a lot I assume you know it was filled correctly? Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted June 11, 2018 Super User Posted June 11, 2018 Hello and welcome to the forum. It may be the type of line you are using. Some lines are not spinning reel friendly. I use mono on mine. I use a barrel swivel and a leader to rig mine. You also need to close the bail by hand or you will be adding to the line twist problem. Quote
Nathan Balog Posted June 12, 2018 Author Posted June 12, 2018 Thanks for the input, the thing is I've never really had issues until I bought this reel. I've watched videos but haven't seen this one before! Will definitely try soaking the spool and hope it takes some of the memory out! Thanks! Quote
FishDewd Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 I also soak my spinning spools, it does seem to help. I have a Lew's mach II and so far it's never twisted up on me! Couldn't really say what your issue is though, could be that, could be the line, could be how the bail on the reel works. Hope you solve it! 1 Quote
Junger Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 I have a Penn Battle II 3000 with 30lb Power Pro braid, no issues, and a Penn Battle II 2000, which had 15lb Power Pro had some issues. After casting the 15lb Power Pro, it would sometimes not lay onto the spool and the line would have loops falling onto the spool body. I changed to 10lb Power Pro and it happens a lot less. No issues with mono or fluoro though. 1 Quote
CRANKTHAT Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 . Older post I see. But anyways I fish alot in stumpy water. I go through line on at least a couple of reels a season. Now and then I will have some problems for various reasons. I am past the cheap line. Just do not do it anymore as I am likley to experience the same problems you currently have. Even better line you have that if it is old line or it is not spooled correctly will tangle. Every now and then I will hook up several swivels together with a large strong hook on the end. I will attach it to my mailbox and set my drag to where it spools out easy. Then I walk down the road keeping the line taunt but comming off the end. When I get a couple revolutions only left on the reel I stop and tighten down the drag to where it will have stronger tension but if I am careful will not break the line. Then I reel in keeping tension strong while walking towards my mailbox. Stretches the line and helps it lose memory while insuring it is nice and tight on my spool. My reels I troll with I do this a few time thrueout the year. First sign of a loop on my spool. The advise from the other posters is sound also, Of course with some of my larger reels I go out to a field and do the same in case my neighbors come home and need to pull in their driveways? Hope this helps somebody. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted December 11, 2019 Super User Posted December 11, 2019 I always close bail by hand also..and check your line roller it could be sticking 1 Quote
