Dave Margerum Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 I have 2 lower end baitcasters. Both are Quantum. One has an aluminum frame, 6.4:1 ratio, more bearings (the better of the 2 reels). The Other has a graphite frame but has a 7.1:1 ratio . Currently using the graphite one, but I'm thinking the aluminum frame would be better. Quote
Ariffy Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 The frame really doesn' t play much of a factor personally I like a higher gear ratio 1 Quote
Super User burrows Posted June 11, 2018 Super User Posted June 11, 2018 Depends on what type of reel your talking about. Quote
Fishingmickey Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 I feel torque/horsepower (lower gear ratio reels 5:1 or 6:1) is more important then speed if your frog fishing heavy grass or cover and having to drag a fish out possibly buried pounds of slop. FM Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Frame and gearing are way down the list when it comes to choosing a frogging combo. Rod and line are your biggest concerns. Use whichever reel you have the confidence in. I've been using a 6.3:1 geared reel for decades. an extra 6in. of line per handle turn isn't going to get me bit more or less and if I can't get them out of cover with that gearing, I doubt I would with the other. 1 Quote

Thanks. I currently have a 7' HF with 65 lb. braid on the graphite/7.1 reel. Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 11, 2018 Super User Posted June 11, 2018 Rod is more important than reel! ? 1 Quote
BuzzHudson19c Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 Speed kills! Really though, I've seen a good fisherman throw frogs with 10lb mono on a spinning setup and not have a problem and a crummy fisherman have all the "right gear" and not be able to land one. Time perfecting your craft is paramount. (Which I'm sure you know, just rambling.) Quote
Jaderose Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 The Speed will keep your fish from going down but if it does then it doesn't really matter what reel you have. At that point your rod is the most important part of your arsenal. That reel ain't gonna drag any fish out of 40 lbs of muck. Quote
