My plug knocker is gathering spider webs, but I'm using braid. For Fluoro, I'd keep the plug knocker handy and it'll save you a lot of lures. Why don't you use the plug knocker with braid? I use braid for 95 percent of my fishing and always carry the plug knocker. Quote

I think the braid allows me to load up the rod a little more without risk of breaking off and when released the lure pops loose. If that doesn't work I just go to the opposite side of the snag and try the same thing. If it still is stuck, which is rare, I just pull it loose. I still have the knocker in my boat, just in case but haven't needed it since going to straight braid. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 12, 2018 Super User Posted June 12, 2018 The OP stated fishing as a co-angler and that puts a different perspective on his question. Asking the front seat to stop and retreive a lure may not go over well. my suggestion is use mono like Big Game or Sunline Defier Armilo and take extra line and extra lures with you. Tom Quote

Super User Tennessee Boy Posted June 12, 2018 Super User Posted June 12, 2018 I think your question is mainly about co-angler etiquette. I think that depends a lot on the tournament and what each angler has on the line. If it's a big money pro tournament, I wouldn't expect they guy to waste a lot of time to save a $7 lure. However, if he's in last place and you're winning the co-angler division he needs to show some consideration for what's on the line for you. If it's a friendly club tournament, then I would expect the guy stop and do whatever he would do if his lure was snagged. Now if you're asking him to stop for three minutes every five minutes, you might need to change lures. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 12, 2018 Super User Posted June 12, 2018 I only fish in team format tournaments anymore, so if the co-angler is hindered, so is the team. However, I'd apply the Golden Rule, regardless of format. 2 Quote

bhoff Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 If you are fishing from a boat it is much easier to maneuver around the area in which the bait is snagged for the most part to retrieve it. However, if you are fishing from the bank then this can become quite difficult. Most of the time if I think that my bait is either snagged on a log or caught in a tree (woops!) I just end up trying to pull. Depending on the lb test of the line you can have moderate success. Last night though I was throwing a jig on 50lb PP and got it stuck on a branch . Proceeded to pull knowing the bait would come out with the high strength line and ended up launching the bait into my arm. Thank god it didn't turn over and get me with the hook because that would have gone in DEEP. Still have a nice welt to show for it though haha. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 12, 2018 Super User Posted June 12, 2018 Not everyone is wired the same, some are very competitive whiles other are laid back. Not everyone as skilled at keeping lures from snagging or getting snagged lures free. If you don't know the boater it's a good idea to ask if it's ok to go in to retrieve a snagged crankbait before breaking it off. I usually ask my backseater to hand me his rod to try to shake the snagged lure free and it's successful most of the time and that gives me an opportunity to demonstrate the technique. It's also easier for me being in control of the boat to manuever it getting the lure out. If all else fails the lure retrieve is deployed. Some anglers don't want any help and prefer to break off lures. Tom Quote

I learnt not to hand him my rod the first or second time I fished with him. Luckily it was only a busted tip insert and not a broken rod. Other than that, he's a great guy. If we can't get my bait free after trying from a couple different angles, I just break it off before he can ask me to hand him my rod. Quote

You hold the rod tip high upright and shake the the tip into slack line to giggle the lure free before trying to force it. Anyone who uses and rod for a lure retreiver is asking for a broken rod. I believe there is a video of someone sliding the rod down the line to spear out the crankbait........nothing good is going to happen doing that trick! Tom Quote
