rod What type and action rod would be best for jerk baits.

I think it depends on the type and size of jerkbait. In a tournament scenario I like to have two rods for JerkBait fishing, the preferred Rod is a 6ft6 Medium Fast Spinning Setup with 8lb mono or copolymer for 1/4oz to 3/8oz and the 2nd Rod is a 6ft6 Medium Moderate Fast Casting Setup with 10 or 12lb Mono or Copolymer for 3/8 and above. Both of these rods can also pull double duty with Sammy style Topwaters and Poppers.

I have several rods I use for jerkbaits depending on which baits I'm fishing. My main jerkbait rods are a 6' 2" XF/M, 6' 3" MF/M, and 6' 8" M/F. The 6' 8" M/F is the most all around rod of them.

I use a lot of medium to large jerk baits. With braid I prefer a mh moderate rod. When I'm using mono or flouro I use a mh extra fast. The idea is to have a soft enough rod action to cushion the strike & fight so as not to pull out treble hooks when using non stretch line. When using stretchy line like mono or flouro you can use a fast or extra fast rod action & still keep hooked up. Also don't forget to use a loose enough drag to help compensate for non stretch lines if needed.

I like XF with braid with a fluoro leader for jerkbait rods, because I don't have to work as hard when I twitch/rip. I use a MH baitcaster for 1/2 oz+ baits and a ML spinning rod for smaller stuff. The lakes I fish are clear, so I like 7'+ rods for long casts, but I fish out of a deep V, so YMMV.
